VFD/motor setup issues - no torque, whining

I'm only reposting what I saw on a machinist forum, where this driver seems to be more common, likely because it can output 400 Hz. I don't think the specific order is required, but it does make a little sense. Factory reset(pd008) before setting anything else. No real point in setting pd004 then erasing it with pd008. It's a flaw in the setup from the manufacturer, who should have probably numbered it in a different order. For me, it would make sense to change the number of a lot of them. Put frequency, voltage, 50/60hz, remote control, amperage, etc., all up at the top of the list, instead of pd004, pd144, pd176, etc.

All of that said, I really like this driver. I'm setting up a remote control panel with forward, reverse, stop, L/M/H speed presets, and variable speed. This will allow me to place the driver underneath the workbench at the back, far away from the dust. It's configurability is outstanding, I can have it display SFPM, RPM, or Hz. My Teco can only display Hz and cost 50% more.

I'll post video as soon as it is finished.

I've had at least eight of the Chinese HuanYang drives so far, over maybe 3 years. One died pretty early and I'm not entirely sure why, though it was running from a small conventional gasoline-powered generator when it died and I suspect that was a factor. The others have all been boringly reliable and are running other people's grinders or various bits of kit that I've put together for my day job.

I put them in IP66 enclosures (NEMA4 equivalent) and use IP66 remote control boxes for start, stop, fwd/rev and speed control. I usually prefer a single-turn speed control pot, though I have also used 10-turn pots. I've not really felt that there is anything to be gained by using the preset speeds in "our" applications as the pot is easy enough to set to an appropriate speed with a 0-100% legend plate. It also makes the wiring simpler and allows the use of a smaller remote control box.

It's not entirely clear whether the drive will accept H,M,L presets and still run to the analog pot when none of the presets are selected. There's nothing I can see to say it won't, but I'd certainly try it with temporary connections before building the box to suit. I've certainly come across other drives where they can be set for either presets or pot, but not both.
