Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be buying a new grinder soon (probably a Reeder). I can save a few hundred dollars by getting the motor and VFD separately and setting those up myself. Is wiring a VFD and motor something that I can/should do without any electrical experience, or should I just spend the money for someone else to do it?
Thanks!
Chris

if you feel comfortable replacing a plug on an extension cord, you should be ok. take your time. double check stuff. get some of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/TWELVE-GARD...830786&hash=item51b64759f6:g:JtEAAOxyUrZSpisu for motor connections. you running VFD on 110 or 240? how far from grinder to outlet you use? buy a 12 gauge extension cord that length. match male end to outlet, cut off female, strip the wires back, crimp these on http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-R...395926?hash=item33b627d556:g:dVgAAOSwaZdXICAy attach to VFD(should be terminals that say L1, L2 READ instruction manual) buy some 12/4 cable long enough for VFD to motor http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-4-SOOW-S...375639?hash=item465bc56c17:g:dAwAAOSwa~BYUovW strip back one end, use some more of the crimps, attach to VFD. strip back other end attach to motor wires with wire nuts. 3 wires carry power. 4th wire is ground, crimp on spade tongue and attach to motor body where shown. the owner's guide will walk you thru.

I would say it's pretty straight forward. There's a few decent youtube vids floating around, and beaumont metal works had a pretty good write up on their website for setting up the VFDs they sell.
I see in your profile you're from Chicago? Where about are you located? I'm not too far away (live in Valparaiso, IN, but work even closer in Hammond, IN, near the state line), and I wouldn't mind seeing a Reeder in person. If you get close to setting everything up and still feel a bit uncomfortable, I could probably swing by after work one afternoon to help you wrap everything up. Just shoot me a PM if and when interested.

Thanks, guys. Feeling better about doing it myself. I'll look through some more videos and see what I think.
Scott.livesey: I'll be running on a 110v outlet. Grinder is about 10' from the outlet.
knife to a gunfight: I live in Edgewater, up on the north end of Chicago proper. Thanks for your offer--I might take you up on it. I'd be happy to show you the Reeder either way.
