Unfortunately, a VFD can only be used with a 3 phase motor. Sorry. If you get a different motor and are building a grinder, make sure you get a VFD that is NEMA 4 rated or metal dust will damage it. -Doug
To get around the NEMA4 rating (=$$$), you can buy a non-wash down rated VFD and mount it in a clean location or build a clean box for it like I did. See my shop tour on my website. I based it off of another member's build from a while back. And yeah, you'll need a 3ph motor.
So being the electrical newbs we are... ( Yes I am a steward in the IBEW but I work on phones not motors ) How would we regulate and adjust RPM's? Would a heavy duty household rheostat work? Is there a better reasonably budget priced ($150.00 or less) product that doesn't require Nikola Tesla to wire up, and wont cause as much wear and tear on a motor? Inquiring Newbie minds want to know
About the cheapest (price) quality VFD I have some across is an ABB ACS150 VFD.
230 volt single phase in and 230 volt 3 phase out.
It'll cost you about $225 or so. It's not NEMA 4 so you'll have to mount it in an enclosure to keep the dust out. It IS a very good drive.
