Greetings everyone,
I finally got my VFD set up and converted my Bader BIII to variable speed. Although I didnt purchase my set up from him, I would like to thank Rob Frink for his invaluable assistance. Without his Basic Wiring and Set-up instructions, and his wiring diagram, I would not have had a clue on how to put everything together. Thank you Rob! (Incidentally, once I had everything assembled I found the motor wouldnt run. I was getting really frustrated until I read this tip on Robs site;Starting requires the switch to be fully flipped upwards against the spring return of the switch. Notice that this switch actually has 3 positions to its mechanical action. I had flipped the Start/Stop switch, but not all the way to the up position. Once I clicked to the third position, the grinder started right up.
For those who may be interested, I went the cheap way and collected the components myself. While I may have saved some money, I certainly sustained more aggravation and wasted more time that way. I purchased a KBAC 27D from State Electric. The price was good, but I found out that the Forward/Reverse switch and the Start/Stop switch were extras. I got my 2hp, 3 phase, Leeson TEFC AC motor (Leeson Catalog No. 111273.00) from eBay. It was sold as being new and looked good. However, it didnt come with a base plate, so I had to have one welded on. (I should have bought Catalog No 113927.00, which comes with a base.) After the electric motor shop charged me $91 for the work, they informed me that the motor was actually used and the front bearing was going. Ah well, its working for now The rest of the stuff, wiring, Carflex flexible tubing, etc., I bought at Lowes.
Anyway, now that I have the VFD up and running, I can finally start working on the straight razors Ive been waiting to make.
Here are a couple of photos of the completed setup;
