I just got a new Cold Steel Voyager with the blade made out of Vg-1 Stainless. Does anyone know if it is a good stainless steel.

I'm always intrigued by people who purchase something....then try to do their research afterwards. Why would you ask this question NOW....you only set yourself up for a let-down.

I suspect that VG-1 is roughly the same as AUS 8, perhaps a little better. Cold Steel buys their steels in batches and if they get a bunch of 440A they make a certain run of knives (like the Pro-Lites and the Night Force) and when the steel is gone, they stop making the knives. In the case of the Vaqueros and some of the others, they may have just bought some batches of VG-1. I don't believe they just decided to upgrade their knives because 1) they just don't do that and 2) it's not a significant upgrade from AUS-8.

A Cold Steel rep told me that once the 440A ran out in the Pro-Lites and Night Forces, those knives would be discontinued unless demand dictated otherwise. He personally liked the knives, but didn't think much of 440A as a steel and didn't try to hide it much.

The Vaquero is a very nice knife though the blades are not as well polished as those of the Voyagers. The knife is tough, good for cutting meat, roots, kindling or using for self defense, and just about anything else. Well...maybe not cutting tomatoes, but it's a good knife.

VG1 is likely a bottom end steel. Might be a little better than 420, but who knows. Cut some stuff and see if it holds an edge.

Often, we make our purchases emotionally then later justify them rationally.

Perhaps the seller's return policy was researched prior to the purchase.;)

Actually, VG-1 does have a higher carbon content (at around 1 percent). AUS 8 has about .70-.75. I know the Vaqueros have VG-1 blades, with the exception of the Grande, but I didn't think that was true of Voyagers.

Pardon, but as I understand it, Cold Steel does not "make" anything. They contract the work out to various makers, such as Ontario, which purchase the raw materials. Cold Steel is a marketing company.

you could say that about any knife company who uses vg10 as its allmade in seki japan. all vg10 knives are made for the companies there. so are fallkniven (although they used to be)just a marketing company or are spyderco etc

Cold steel does not use VG-10, they use VG-1. If you do a search for it, it will be explained how they are different.;)

cold steel is not my point. i figured that they were just tying to call vg10 something of thyre own. but when someone said that they werent the same steels i just figured that it was a ploy to confuse newbie buyers into thinking that they were actually using the same high grade steels as the other companys.

yes.
But cold Steel uses VG-1, not VG-10

dantheman123 said that its really vg10. cold steel just calls it vg1 to make it sound like their own.

DANTHEMAN123 wouldn't know VG-10 if it was growing from his nostrils.

VG-1 is not the same as VG-10, just as AUS4 isn't the same as AUS10.

Cold steel's premium stainless is still AUS8.

Please refrain from reading and certainly from believing anything Dan said before he was kicked out. He is a fool of the highest order. I had one in aus 8 and it cut just fine, I have no experience with VG-1. Let us know how it works out.

Edit: Just read your other thread and I guess I know how it worked out.

Yeah, I think it's a matter of economics. VG-1 and AUS 8 are both decent steels for this kind of knife. Cold Steel probably got a good deal on the former and decided to hype it a little (not that they would ever engage in hype). The carbon content is a little higher, though whether it's a major step up remains to be seen.

If AUS 8 made the old Voyager a "cutting dynamo," whatever will VG-1 make it? I await in giddy anticipation.
