VG-10 & 154cm: Which do you like better....

I doubt that most will see any substantive difference in day to day use, between VG-10 and 154CM. When heat treated properly by Spyderco and Paul Bos, both are excellent steels.

I would choose 154cm over VG-10 just because in my use they are very similar & 154cm is made on the soil I call home. Either way I prefer S30V. I think it is easily worth the extra cost usually associated with it and fairly widely used. My 154cm Grip is a great knife, but my Millie blows it away.

Like others say... Typically if you're talkin VG-10, you're likely talkin Spyderco... who always (IMO) applies a near perfect heat treat. When you're talkin 154cm... Well so many makers (custom & production) use the steel there are associated variables. BM would obviously be a more common one. I find BM's HT to be adequate though somehow difficult to rid a "wire edge" during and post sharpening. Removing that wire edge is paramount to edge holding or it will shave paper, immediately get dull, then seem sharpish again.

Not only Spyderco uses VG-10. I have a SOG and a Fallkniven in VG-10 and they also have great blades/heat treatment.

Between these two steels, if done properly, I don't care which one I carry whatsoever. Some of my favorite knives to carry are 154CM and I feel good inside when I'm carrying them :D

154Cm first. VG-10 2nd. 154CM because it sharpens well, holds it's edge well, and it's made in the USA.

I have used and sharpened a lot of both

I definitely prefer VG-10

But to be frank, it is probably because I like the shape of the letters

Me too man! Definitely these letters transpire confidence, quality, extreme Japanese craftsmanship :D

When I got my last Mini-Grip (with a 154CM blade) Iwasn't at home. My 13 yo brother told me on the phone "the blade is 154 centimeters". So yeah, for those who use the metric system 154CM it's quite funny...

(Thanks Sal!) I have both and like both, but I? like the VG10 slightly better.

VG10
I have knives in both and the couple I have in 154cm tend to microchip really bad.
I have one in CPM154 and that hasn't had the same microchipping problems. It could be heat treat but it works well and is a winner. I would buy a knife in CPM154 but not in plain 154cm. My experience with CPM154 is limited to one knife but that has been a positive experience.
Vg10 is just awesome I would buy vg10 over 154cm any day.

VG-10 for me. Like others have said, I find I can put a better edge on it. My one 154 cm Griptilian I am not all too impressed with. I know they are almost identical, but I also much prefer ATS-34 to 154 cm.

Maybe edge geometry has something to do with sharpness. If spyderco made the blades with 154cm and Bm made it with vg10, I bet people will say that 154cm will take a razors edge and the vg10 will Takw a mediocre edge longer. Just a thought

Interesting to read the trend on this from a few years back. I wonder if perspectives have changed? I use to love 154cm, but chipping is an issue (Benchmade). I haven't had any such issues with VG10 (Spyderco).

I hated my vg10 endura. After the initial 'factory sharpness' I coudnt put an edge on it. Then I learned how to sharpen. What a steel! I wondered why spyderco used it so often, now I know.

My experience with 154. 3 knives in 154. All Benchmades. All chipped badly after sharpening. Micro chips along the entire edge. My brother and fathers Ffg enduras in vg10 chipped, but that was more user neglect than anything. Pesky zip ties.

I much prefer vg10.

One more thing.
Even with inferior edge geometry I prefer vg10.

Sabre ground vg10 > hollow ground 154cm.
