VG-10 characteristics

I figure this is the best place ...

I'd like to add an entry for VG-10 in the Steel FAQ. These days I like to compare each new stainless steel to ATS-34, since most people have a general idea of ATS-34's performance characteristics, at least as heat-treated by many manufacturers. So, how would you compare VG-10 to ATS-34? My unscientific feelings: VG-10 is tougher and takes a finer edge. Rust resistance and wear resistance are about the same.

What do you guys think?

I cannot comment to much since I just got my first VG-10 blade last week. I will say that it sure seems to take a very sharp edge.

I think that VG-10 is easier to sharpen and takes a better edge but ATS-34 is probably tougher because it has a much higher percentage of molybdenum.

I remember a post from Sal Glesser comparing VG-10 to AUS-8 stating that VG10 has better edge retention and better corrosion resistance than AUS8. Wouldn't that make VG10 be more corrosion resistant then ATS-34?

Joe - Our "Laboratory tests" (CATRA) indicate that VG-10 (properly heat treated) got 32% sharper than ATS-34. Edge retention; VG-10 stays sharper longer by 29%

VG-10 after 6 hour "Q" fog was superior to ATS-34 in corrosion resistance by 22% and after 72 hours, by 3 times.

hope that helps.

Sal, can you get those performance characteristics with the same heat treat? In other words, was the 32% sharper and the 29% longer edge retention at the same Rockwell hardness? The reason I ask is the statement "properly heat treated" made me wonder if you were needed two different heat treatments to get those two difference performance parameters.

OD - they were similar Rc, but that was coincidental. Wwe try to test at optimum Rc for the steel. The reason that I stated "properly" is because VG-10 has some heat treating tricks that not all heat treaters are familiar with. (Sorry, can't go into details)
