VG 10 chipping.

Thanks. i've decided to get an A1. I like a convex edge and stainless in a survival knife. Looks like it should handle normal cutting abuse ...

Good choice, VG10 is not a type of steel to chip but will deform. This is a good thing because its much easier to fix a roll than a chip.

FYI, most call deformations chips, a chip is a fracture of metal unlike a deformation that is a bending or compressing of metal.

I chipped my F1 slightly because I got "bored" and stupid by batoning (wich I never do) and violently going through knot. Nothing dramatic, just a bit sharpening and all good.

Theoretically 3G will chip more easely than VG-10 because it's harder and so it's more like a "break instead of bending"... am I right assuming that?

Speaking of this, for hard batoning & chopping steels like 1095 should be better than a 3G or S30v or CPM154 right?

thank you!

I would make those same generalizations, all other things being equal. (Same geometries of blade and edge, good heat treats, etc.)

I have an A1 and I put it through hard use. Look on Knifetest.com, they do the destruction tests, and it holds up better than most other knives.

I've never had a problem with chipping with the VG-10 blade in my Spyderco Captain. I've used this knife harder at times that it was meant to be used I'm sure with no problems. A lot, I think, comes down to heat treat and edge geometry.

A fine choice among many

Your A1 will serve you well.

I had the SMALLEST chip occur on my Delica. I can't even remember how it happened. It came out VERY quickly with some light sharpening. Hasn't happened since on any of my VG-10 knives. Overall, I don't think it's anything to be concerned about; VG-10 is an incredible, versatile, well-balanced steel capable of being easily sharpened while holding a very sharp edge for a long time.

Again we are confusing a chip with a deformation.

I don't think the steel is inherently chippy. The Fallkniven A1 has a robust convex grind. I don't think you'll chip it unless you try chopping rocks.

i have an f1, i'm very please with it. yesterday i have chop some branches and it works better then i've expected.
my opinion... buy it. you will not regret.
