vg-10 over cpm s30v.

Just because your S30V knife is sharper than your VG10 knife does not mean that it is because of the steel. Blade geometry has a lot more to do with it. Even how long the edge lasts has as much to do with edge retention as steel type. Spyderco is a great company to test different steels because you can often find identical knives in different steels.
This is the whole point of the Mule knives.

I am a big fan of S30V. It is a heck of a good steel and I just had a new S30V knife show up today(Chris Reeve Inyoni) but there are some knives that are better suited to a mid grade stainless like VG-10 or AUS 8. The Yang kitchen knife is a great example of a knife that is better off with VG10 than S30V. It does not need the extra toughness and should be easier to sharpen.

o a mid grade stainless like VG-10 or AUS 8.

I have come to like S30V as well and probably prefer it over VG-10 but I am not even sure about that. HOWEVER, I don't think that VG-10 is a mid grade steel. VG-10 is about as good as stainless steels come!

I'm no expert at sharpening, but I've spent enough time doing it such that I'd say I'm probably a little better than average.

My experience with S30V has always been, uh, annoying. Can't get it sharp like I can VG-10 - at least, not in a reasonable amount of time (like, 5 minutes). So, although I loved the design and feel of the two Paramilitarys I've had in the past, I traded them because I couldn't take the hassle/time of sharpening them. If only they had VG-10. Won't buy another one (i.e. anything with S30V).

I recently said that I could get VG-10 sharper than I could get S30V. this is because I was able to make VG-10 & ZDP-189 split a hair in 4. Last night I did it my Paramilitary (S30V).

Interesting thread I have both not really sure I can tell much of a difference, the vG10 appears to be a little more easy to sharpen but then that may have more to do with the blade. I would like to see a comparison between the same two blade types thickness etc...reviewed by a good knife maker.

Like em both. S30V is my favorite steel (so far) for a folder. All my sharpest knives have it. But I also have quite a few in VG-10. The knives have been different models with different style blades and profiles, however. So, have never done side-by-side comparions of same models in the two different steels.

I hate S30V to the point that if that's the only steel offered, I won't get the knife. I've never been able to get it sharp, and all of my S30V knives dull as fast or faster than AUS 8A. VG 10, however, gets extremely sharp, and holds it an acceptable time. I love it, one of my favorite stainless steels.

Like I said above, IMHE (experience), in order to effectively sharpen s30v use diamond! Doesn't take more thana few swipes once or twice a week to keep my native sharp. Unfortunately, s30v does NOT like that razor edge and will quickly drop back to a working edge... which it will hold very well.

Its an every-man's steel if you ask me. I like it, but its not best for *me*

I'm very surprised that you've experienced longer edge retension with AUS8A over S30V. What angles do you have them at when you're comparing the two?

I love VG-10 myself. I don't say VG-10 is better than S30V, as I like S30V too.
From my experience, VG-10 with its finer grain polishes nicer than S30V so you can obtain a very fine edge. Not necessarily a good thing as a coarse, utilitarian edge serves me better for certain purposes.
Indeed, VG-10 sharpens easier than S30V, but both are fairly easy to sharpen so this is not such a big deal.

I took them down to 15 - 20 deg per side on my Edgepro. Yeah, my experience has been completely different than most people's. I've never seen the chipping problem, I've only seen lousy edges that go dull in a heartbeat. I sent one of mine off to get re-heat treated, and it was bumped from 57 to 60.5 HRC. It helped, but still wasn't close to my D2 blades. I think I'd have to get it up to 63 from what I've read from others' experience in order to really improve it.

My VG 10 blades show edge holding very similar to Carbon V, which is very good, but I wish I could say the same for the S30V's.... As always, YMMV.

I love both steels. :D
(Vg10 can take easily mirror polished razor edge, S30V stays sharp a little longer. Your choice...)

Fortunately, there's enough steel variety in Spyderco to have a choice, so generally, you can still pretty much have your pick.
