Vg-10

I tend to need a pocket scalpel from time to time in my travels. Mainly because I have dodgy ankles and like the movie heroine I am always rolling one or both of them at precisely the worst moment. My Native III is easy to get scary sharp so I can shave and tape my ankles prior to doing any scrambling/rock dodging. Anyway...that's me....back to the VG10. I think it's the perfect steel for a small/medium folder because of the ease in which it can be made scary, hair flinging sharp.

Big fan of VG-10! And S30V, too! Have seen catastrophic edge failure with VG10, but you'd have to be me to achieve it. Otherwise, it sharpens easy, stays sharp almost as long as S30V, and is very corrosion resistant.

I have done side-by-side comparisons of my one VG-10 (Calypso Jr) against some of my S30V (Native), BG-42 (Buck) and D2 (Queen, BM). This was in a combination of cardboard and pine. VG-10 is definitely a step down in edgeholding compared to the others.

I have had no problem getting a hair-popping edge on any of these steels, either.

I have 2 Spyderco Enduras in VG-10. One I sharpen to a 20 degree angle, it is very sharp but does not stay sharp as long. The other one I sharpen to a 25 degree angle and it stay sharp much longer. I take long runs with my Enduras, it rust a little at first inside the Spyderhole but after I clean it out with a little mili-tec the rust never came back.
