VG10 or CPMS30V???

Hey Guys..

I'd go with the VG10 as well..

I've personally seen several S30 knives that have Chipped out, really bad..
One was a BM Vex, the other a custom..

It may be a good steel,, however I'm not Overly impressed with it...

I don't really trust any lock knife unless it has a choil because for me no lock is unbreakable and I like that added safety that a choil gives me. How different does the VG10 native feel? Pros and cons anyone:D?

The Native III in VG10 has a somewhat different grind. It has a more rounded handle that fills the hand more but is a bit thicker in the pocket. It has a wire clip as opposed to a solid clip on the Native. The III is made in Japan. The Native is made in USA.

I like the grind of the III. I find it very comfortable in my hand even when applying a lot of pressure, yet it is still comfortable to carry in my pocket. I find that the wire clip holds on the pocket well and does not get hung on stuff as much as the solid clips I have on other knives.

I also wanted VG10 over S30V. There have been occasional reports of S30V Native blades chipping and I did not want to mess with that. (Yeah it is infrequent but why worry about it when VG10 never has the problem at all.)

I probably carry the Native III more frequently than any of my other knives when I am not at work (2" blade length limit at work.) The only minor negative for me on the Native design (applies to both models) is the choil. I have to use the choil to hold the knife comfortably and that leaves me with a 2 1/2" blade. If I got a 3" blade, I'd like to use it as a 3" blade, not a 2 1/2" blade. But I read above that you like choils, so that will not be a negative to you. And for me the rest of the design is so useful that I don't mind the choil.

I don't think you could go wrong with either model, but I chose the Native III and am happy with it.

Eric,

Are you sure you mean the Benchmade Vex and not another model of theirs? The Vex is one of their red line, Chinese made models with 8Cr14MoV, not S30V.

There are reports of s30v chipping and rarely any for vg10 chipping. so toughness goes to vg10, and i think that vg10 is more stain resistant. dealbreaker.

Do you remember where you saw the reports?

Hi, Ann :),
They were all over this forum. It went so far that a german observer of bladeforums stated on the german Messerforum that the 'movie' "The Rise and Fall of S30V" was 'playing' on bladeforums.
Initially I remember seeing mostly complaints about BM's S30V, then when Spyderco started to sell the Native through Walmart, there were a number of reports of poorly performing Natives, though I haven't read anything about a bad Native in a looong time now. So what ever the problem was, it seems fixed now. In general, there seem to be a lot few complaints about S30V lately. Personally, I think S30V can be a great steel. Cutting performance wise the Buck Mayo Kaala (BOS heattreat) for example is a pleasure.

Thx HoB,
Seems I need to get out more--to the 'movies' at least:).

A fixed blade, I'm in Northern Ireland and fixed blades don't go down too well. I'll go with the VG10 Native I like a knife that files the hand more. wish we had some stores over here to feel knives and all :D.

My favorite folder is a large Sebenza S30V. It holds an edge extremely well. I like this steel in a folder, and Chris Reeve seems to do it right. My current favorite fixed blade is a Fallkniven F1 in laminated VG10. Sharp, convex edge. Nice and solid for those tough fixed blade jobs. So, looks like I have my bases covered !

What knife is that?

I`d rather not say but it`s a fixed blade in solid VG10,not sandwiched, from a very famous company.I use it in the kitchen and it`s a horror,a cheap Imperial or Hoffritz knife which are made from 440 is much better. All stainless steel is crap.

I have many custom knives in S30V, as well as CRK's. I have been VERY happy with S30V!

I've had more than a few S30V blades chip out. VG10 is nice, but more "toothy" like D2.
If its one that doesn't chip, I prefer S30V, as it takes a better polished edge.

I have a Native in sv30 and an AL Mar Mini Sere in vg10. I like them both. They hold wicked sharp edges, and are tough blades. I just don't know, They are so darn nice.

Both are great. I give a slight edge to VG-10 for being a bit more well-rounded in use and much easier to sharpen.
