Vg10 vs CoS

The only thing I'm really interested to know is about the edge retention... I've heard cos is better but how much.. also wear resistance wise how does vg10 stack up to 3v(fallkniven and bark river) can't find any comparisons about those two steels in the same thread but wondering how much better the 3v will hold an edge compared to the vg10. Going to get an f1 and I've found some that aren't pro f1 but with the regular f1 profile just with the upgraded steel. However it does come with a tan thermorun handle which I really don't like. I would choose performance over looks but don't want to spend the extra money for something I don't like when in reality I probably don't even need the upgrade.

I have a BR Scandi in 3v, the F1 in VG-10, F1 in 3G and the F1 Pro in Cos.

For wear resistance and edge retention, 3G works best.
For toughness and keen edges 3V and Cos is the top choices.
For a wellbalanced steel between toughness, ease of sharpening and wear resistance, VG-10 is still a really good choice.

I like all of these steels, but a lot of the edgeperformance comes from how I sharpen them and I tend to end up with polished edges.
A polished edge works very well with VG-10 and I have no complaints at all.

What to choose has to be up to You to decide, but regardless You will get a very good tool!

Edge retention of 3v and vg10, in my uses 3v is way superior, that's skinning and general cutting. Durability goes to 3v also. I have two knives in this cos steel, and so far I'm really impressed by it, not sure if it will out cut 3v, I'm sure it will not actually. But it's easier to field sharpen. You can't go wrong with either of these choices. I have not ever used 3G steel, so can't comment on it. 3v is one of my favorite steels ever, especially when it's heat treated by Nathan Carothers! But this cos steel is becoming one of my favorites really quick.

Yea the f1 in vg10 I like because of the price...they have one in cos for 160 somewhere with the regular f1 grind but an ugly ass yellow handle imo. It's the f1d.. I'd pick up a brk if it wasn't a hundred dollars more..I guess the f1 with vg10 has to be pretty good with all the knives they sale

Guess I'll keep my eyes posted on the for sale forumn I've seen some really good deals that are pretty recent that got sold very fast

You have to think of CoS like "super VG10"
Kinda like blue steel #1 and super blue steel.Esentialy the same but increased performance from more of the same alloy.

That doesn't mean it competes with 3v they are apples and oranges.

3v will hold a longer edge and is tougher.

I like Cos because it's sharpens faster then 3v and strops like a dream. Its unique because it loses nothing to VG10 except price and availability.

You are probably right and I agree about how easy Cos is to sharpen, but I don't find 3V difficult to get sharp.

Took longer zero grind convex sharpen a bravo 1 3v then the A1 pro. That's all :)

So 3v holds an edge longer but how much longer.. twice as long? Maybe not that much to notice? Is it a hundred dollars more better haha

Nvm it's the 3G that fallkniven sells and 3v in brk.. might just have to go with the standard f1 for now..is there any reason why I shouldn't or does anyone have anything against vg10.. I hear mixed reviews on it.. some say retention is good some say it's horrible. Some say leave it toothy some say laharoen it nice and polished..

I would get that f1 that's available in cos. The handle is desert brown, it probably just looks yellowish in the pictures. But if price is an issue, you can't go wrong with the standard f1.

That shits ugly haha.. and its 60 more so that gives me enough for that handle to be an issue I guess.. but obviously I can't make my mind up so I guess the only question I have is there any good way to paint or change the color on the thermorun handles

Doubt it. People have stripped the thermorun off and make custom scales, but that's quite involved.

There's one guy who sharpies his spyderco handles, but it doesn't look good. Not an advertisement for the procedure, for sure.

VG-10 is very good steel, judging by my F1. It held up as well as my buddy's Carbon V blade when we skinned a black bear one time. That greasy, gritty hide will take the edge off practically anything. VG-10 seems to have a bite like D2 and S30V, maybe due to larger carbides. I've eyed the H1 with the 3G laminated steel but the price difference puts me off; not sure there's that much to be gained. The Thermorun grip though works very well in slippery/wet/bloody conditions.

Well if this desk ion wasn't already hard enough I just realized cold steel sellls the master hunter in 3v for the same price as fallkniven a f1 in vg10. i still think the f1 and the f1d will be the ones I end up choosing out the bunch...only time will tell.

Yea I figured painting them or anything would just strip off. Figured there might be a way to do it though. I like the thermorun just don't like the yellow handle just not the desert tan color. I normally wouldn't wry so much ab the looks but the standard f1 looks way more appealing to me.

I think there is a way to get a F1 d in black thermorun, but it will cost!

FK offers a rehandling service of old users.
If You buy directly from FK HQ in Sweden and also order a rehandling of the new knife, You could get a F1 in Cos with black thermorun handle.

It will be a lot more expensive and closer to the F1 3G, but You would get the version You want.

Yea by that time I'd be better off getting a gunny hunter in 3v.. keep changing my mind between the two.. I think I need them all. Only way to get rid of this itch

Yea it's all or nothing.. vg10 f1 or 3v bark river gunny. F1 is 120 the gunny is probably 220 after shipping... I'm pretty sure this shit will drive me crazy before it's all over

Regarding your original question, are you looking for subjective anecdotal evidence or some sort of objective scientific evidence?
