Vibram five fingers

cholla? i've had that stuff go into the soles of Nike ACG shoes before. i'm thinking that Vibram five fingers might not be the best thing for the desert.

I can agree with you on this. I love mine, but I know that if I were to step on a Osage Orange or Locust Tree branch, the thorns would have no problem penetrating them. Hell, I've had those things penetrate tires. I think the best way to approach wearing these shoes is to treat the situation as if you were barefoot and to be prepared for the consequences of same. Ie. watch where you walk, etc. They are like any thing else; match your gear to your situation as best you can. I mean, I like to ride my motorcycle, but these are not appropriate for that. There's no free lunch.

I disagree about sharp stuff - might be possible to step on a broken bottle that is able to gash through them but they handle sharp rocks, bottle caps, etc, just fine.

The soles are really very durable. A nail or very sharp object will penetrate any shoe without a base plate. If you have arch issues, heal spurs, existing plantar Fasciitis, they will not be good for you. Orthotics help realign the spine and postural alignment of the ankles, knees, hips. If your joints are not in proper alignment, then the joint will not wear properly and you will exasperate your problems. Not everyone is born to run.
