I have a huge toolbox in my garage, but the only thing that worked for valve shim removal on my motorcyle today was my Tinker's can opener. Glad I had it with me!
It's amazing what a SAK can do with a bit of creativity. I still remember the one MacGuyver where he used it to snag a keyring of tools to unlock his jail cell from the floor.
I assume you used the sharp tip to sneak in and break the surface tension of the shim on the top of the valve?
I've done valve spacing on motorcycle engines before too, and it is AMAZING how tightly two parts can hold onto one another if they're well-finished and covered with oil...
