Anyone have one and what do you think of it? I'm carrying a soldier right now and I'm thinking of switching to this model for the use of a second blade. Thoughts?
I don't have an Electrician, but do have an Electrician Plus, which adds a saw. The electrician's blade on the Electrician/Electrician Plus is a nice short and strong blade. A great alternative for heavier tasks or tasks which you don't want to use your main blade for, like cutting open plastic packages or card board.
I love it. I opted to buy one instead of a Solider/Pioneer and have been really happy with it. I wish the cap opener tool had been replaced with the "combo" tool, but that's a small complaint.
I posted the pics below in Gull Wing's "Comparison pics" thread, but will relink them below. This compares a Vic Spartan, 84mm Tinker, Electrician, Cadet and Alox Bantam (right to left in the top pic, top to bottom in the lower pic).
I wish they had kept the old style cross on it. That kind of set it apart from the other Alox models.
I keep thinking of one too. It doesn't seem like a high volume model, so I wouldn't be surprised if it were discontinued shortly, and we'd all be crying about it.
I think the trade-off of the can opener/small screwdriver for the electricians blade is a good one. I never use the can opener anyway, and I always carry a Vic Rambler so the small screwdriver base is already covered. I use the short electricians blade about as often as the main blade.
I think I could open a can with the electricians blade if I had to; I don't think the can opener would do so well opening bubble packages, or cutting/scoring plastics, wood, rubber, linoleum, etc. So yes, I'd much rather have the second blade than the can opener.
I grind off the keyring nub on all my SAKs that are unlikely to ever be keychain or lanyard carried. Really makes them more comfy in the pocket.
I disagree about replacing the bottle opener with the combo tool though. I find the screwdriver on the combo tool is much more apt to close on me unexpectedly, and also that it is a less useful size than the full size one on the bottle opener. Lastly, the blunt bottle opener would open a can in a pinch, I think.
