Holy crap, I just found one NIB at an army surplus store. I got it for $40AUD which is roughly 32USD. The thing is authentic (trust me at that price, I examined every inch of it).
:eek::D
did I get a good deal or what?

I have one myself. Those are very sought after.

I'm jealous.....great score.

How about some pics?

good on you, mate!
it being a discontinued item and all, makes it a genuine SAK collectable.
thus being so, you'ld probably be getting offers for it too.

That sounds like a great score to me. I have one that was modded up for me and I love it. One of my top three SAKs.

At the risk of sounding stupid (not hard for me), what makes the Scientist SAK different?
I've several SAK's including one with magnifying glass, etc (big black one). Being a retired
chemist, I'm curious about a "scientist sak". Any pics appreciated.
Thanks
Rich

Jokes with Dantor aside, the Scientist really is one of my regular EDC knives. Well done on finding an original Noobien.

I used to have one of those. Not sure where it is now, must hunt around and see if I can find it.

"Rich S"
it's populararity is due to it's compact 2-layered choice of bladetools.
the thing with SAK's is that there are numerous bladetool arrangements which frankly for most models, many not be fully utilized.
the Scientist at the very least, is just the thing for anyone with a minimalist perspective for an EDC SAK.

Nope no pin in mine. It has a mini screwdriver, pen, toothpick and tweezers. I'll try to get some pics up sometime this week (when I find my camera).
:D

If it does not have the pin (the hole for it is in the scales by the base of the corkscrew) then it is a pre-1991 - the year the pin was introduced.

The combo tool was introduced on 91mm SAKs in 1986 -
so your Scientist was made between 1986-91.

Vic Scientist is probably one of the best victorinoxes made... It sucks its discontinued. I love the Philips screwdriver and way its made and the magnifying glass.

The Explorer is much like the Scientist in that regard, though you also get an additional small pen knife and scissor.

The Explorer is how Powernoodle rides.

Actually there was a model that was basically the Scientist with scissors -
it retains the combo tool which saves a layer making it an only 3-layered knife vs. the Explorer's 4-layers.
It was a short lived model and I think might have been exclusive to the USA - as Victorinox (Switzerland) did not know of the name
- the Yeoman -
