I should have taken pics of this, but didn't think of it until halfway done. Anyway, I bought a coconut at the store, since I like them. I was going to go get a phillips screwdriver so I could beat it through the eye of the cocount to drain the water. Instead, I pulled out my Soldier, and used the awl to drill out the eyes. Only took a minute. I tapped around the coconut's groove with a hammer to crack it, and then used the Soldier's large screwdriver blade to pop out the flesh. It was perfect for the job. A few minutes with a veggie peeler removed the paper-like membrane from the flesh, and I have a bowl of raw coconut to enjoy. Whether you enjoy coconut or not, you must admit that you can do just about anything with a SAK.

I love the Alox Soldier so much I have 2 of them,in case the one I carry gets lost. The only other knife I have more than one of the same knife is the Buck 110.Yeah,the Soldier rocks!

Too bad they were discontinued in 2008, with a final run of 5000 not long ago
anyway. but they can still be found fairly easy
I had 3 of those. one got lost ; I think I will buy one or two more, or maybe a Wenger SI, for the lanyard wire attachment option
The old soldier is the best SAk in my opinion, strong, sturdy, tough blade and spring, compact, and still packing the essentials
not to forget is legal to carry quite everywhere, and sheeple friendly
truly one of the best EDC items ever made
It cuts, can pry, it opens cans and beers :D. punches holes, sharpens easy and holds a nice edge on its full flat spear point blade, has two screwdrivers, and seems to be indestructable

I got this Soldier while I was laid-up with a broken leg last February, and it hasn't left my side since. Truly an EDC par excellance. I am buying a backup for it. I must have 50 knives, but I carry the Soldier, and a Rambler on the keychain. I'm 41, and I don't think I'll ever be without a Soldier if I can help it.

In all truth, it's very hard to find a better all around pocket knife than a Vic soldier. There's better "knives" around, there's more expensive knives around, there's even way better looking knives around.

But there's nothing quite in it's class of rugged multi use pocket knife.:thumbup:

Carl.

I've been seeing the different colored Pioneers and Farmers around, but I would love to see a Gunmetal Soldier. It wouldn't be an issue Soldier then, but it would be a nice looking knife.

Ok, let me understand this. From all of the hype of the old Soldier, I have been searching one to buy. I could not find one that was a good price and I am not paying 99.00 for one. I have ordered a Pioneer because it seems to be almost the same thing as the soldier. What I want to know is, is the pioneer the same as the soldier? Is it as good? Same build or is the Wenger the same? I just want some experienced people to help me out here. Since I have already ordered the pioneer, I will just have to be happy with it. I was just curious. I already have a farmer and electrician plus. I wish I would have bought a Vic Soldier back when I could have for a decent price but I didnt know they were gonna quit making them. I will admit that like I said before, I do have a Farmer and Electrician plus but I never carry them. They are great knives but I have a pet peeve about the main blade being at an angle when they are open. It looks like the blade is crooked. Man they are great knives though.

The Pioneer has the keyring on it, the newer ones have the rectangle area for engraving on the scales opposite side of the shield, and the shield is different. Other than those minor differences it's the same build. I've had a Pioneer for 30+ years, IMO it's just as good.

JohnnyR, thank you for the clarification. I am now excited about getting my new knife. Thank you so much for the information. As I understand it, the Pioneer is pretty much excepted everywhere. So if I go to Great Britan, It would be ok to carry in my pocket? Thanks.

the soldier alos ais so great that i got 10 of them!... they would outlast me, but i cant resist this alox beauty, well design slipjoint, ultra durable, affordable and comfortable to use...

if its good enough for swiss military from 1961 to 2008, its good enough for me...

to bad macgyver never use one hehehe...

I carry a Electrician plus quite often. Your comment about the main blade being at an angle caught my eye, as I never noticed that before.
I'm looking at it now & frankly don't see any angle when the blade is open.
Unless my eyes are deceiving me, it looks pretty straight to me.
However I did notice the blade has more belly (right below the nail nick) than it does closer to the tang, which I confirmed with a micrometer.
Is that what you're referring to?

The blades on these knives are "krinked", a knifemaking term meaning a bending or twisting the blade to clear other blades/tools when they are all in the closed position. I think they look twisted. The edge is straight, so that's really all that matters.

Look on Ebay. They show up all the time for super cheap. Bought a NIB 2005 for $22 free shipping. Not sure where you're looking, but they are very easy to find. Pioneer is a Soldier with a key ring and a different cross. Same knife.

OK, thanks. I hadn't thought of that as being the angle wildone39 was referring to, but it makes sense. That i see, no problem. :)

I'm carrying my red Pioneer for weeks now. For me the Pioneer or Soldier is the ideal EDC pocket knife.

Thanks for the clarification on that. I think I may try the Bay and see it I can find a Soldier. Its purely for collecting purposes and I will carry Both that and the Pioneer on a rotation. I dont know why I bought it because I have over 25 SAK's. I guess I am just a SAK fanatic. Thank you for letting me know that I could carry it in the UK. I was hoping I could.

You don't have to explain why you bought it to us. :)

I think you'll find these alox 93mm knives are a breed of their own and quite different from the typical SAK. The walk and talk is fantastic. Give us your impression of the Pioneer when you get it.
