Picked up a Victorinox Super Tinker as my EDC for tomorrow along with my Sage 1 as a backup blade. I'm sort of wondering how well these hold up in EDC conditions. The knife came with it's own belt pouch which is nifty because it is a bit beefy but mostly I wanted it for the advantages of having multiple tools with me and two decent blades of varying sizes. Any second input on Victorinox knives as EDC blades?

I have the general idea as to what the replies will end up being but more or less I'm looking for edge retention abilities and how often this sucker needs to be sharpened and how often, which again would all depend on what it's used for, I'd suppose. Thank goodness for secondary blades on folders with cheaper steel, at any rate.

Sak make great edc. World wide I'd expect them near the top or the top. In their case, success speaks for itself. The steel is fine.

I EDC SAKs either pocket or pouch carry. The Super Tinker lacks the saw but has the scissors. My experience using the main blade is that it does a surprisingly good job slicing into hardwood. Edge holding has been good and touchup with a steel is quick and easy. I use mainly the Hiker and Fireman and my most used tools are the main blade and the saw.

I almost always have my Tinker or Leatherman Micra in my right front pocket in addition to my full size EDC knife. I was carrying the Deluxe Tinker for a while but it was a bit too bulky for me. In addition to those, I sometimes have a Classic or Rally either in a pocket or on my keys. They hold an edge for a long time with only occasional use, so I don't even have to give resharpening much of a thought.

Sounds like I may have a good choice of brand for new EDC-ing considering I mainly don't do a lot of hard-use with my knives unless very specific and rare situations call for them.

With an annual production figure that would swamp any other three knife companies, that's many millions of people a year that edc a sak. I would guess than most of them are happy, otherwise Victorinox would not have been in business since 1890.

A sak is very easy to touch up in the field. The bottom of a coffee cup, top edge of your car window, top of a boot to strop on, will bring back the blade edge well enough to keep on cutting. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how well a ask will do all you have do in real world day to day life.

One beef I have on my Super Tinker (and my only beef,) is that the hook tool doesn't have... any way to open it. It's like I have to get my finger on the top of the knife and grab it that way. o_O
I hope I don't need it in a pinch because I don't have much to speak of for fingernails.

Yeah, that little teensy bit of lip at the top edge is what's supposed to be used for opening. Don't forget you can use the toothpick or tweezers to start it opening if you had to.

I too always have some type of SAK on me for EDC. I carry my Vic Climber free in my front right pocket, with my locking EDC blade (has been my Paramilitary2 since I got it) clipped to my right pocket.

My brother will carry a Vic Classic with his Dragonfly and my best bud carries a Vic Tinker (both of their knives are from me...) :D

I carry my super tinker just about everyday paired with a folder. If you want another good one get the fieldmaster, its the super tinker with a wood saw.

I carry a Vic ALOX Soldier every day. It sees more use that my tacti-cool folders by far. As Jackknife says, they perform well and are a breeze to sharpen. The steel is supposed to be 420hc and I find it perfectly acceptable in a EDC role. You won't find a tighter slip joint than a Victorinox, at least in my opinion.

I've been carrying various models of Victorinox SAKs for over 30 years. I use them more than any other knife--truly every day. They are NOT meant to be abused though.

Out of curiosity, what are you actually using it for (or expect to)? The "parcel carrier" is probably the most universally recognized as the most useless SAK tool.

I've been carrying Vic Swiss Army Knives for over 25yrs now and they are great! They hold up just fine and the steel keeps a good edge. Also it is easy to touch up when the times comes. They will take some suprising abuse if the situation demands it. I can honestly say I use my Vic Executive every day. I can't say this about my other knives.

My first knife was a Victorinox Huntsman that I got when I was 12, and I edc'd it until I was 30. I stopped carrying it regularly about ten years ago, but I still use it around the house a bit. It was just about my only knife for many of those years and it got used and abused hard. Although it shows its wear, it is still perfectly functional today.

SAKs don't hold their edge like a high end knife, but they do so accceptably and are easy to sharpen.

I would say that a SAK holds up well as an edc.

This is true for me as well, although in my case, the knife is an Alox Soldier with an "86" date on the knife blade. It is the knife that accompanies me almost everywhere, being part of the morning "must-have" triad which includes the wallet and the wristwatch.

It has never once given me a reason to complain, which is more than I can say for a lot of things.

I edc a Climber or Huntsman in a sheath everyday.I also have a Classic or Rambler on my Keychain. They are my most used knives, period.Vic SAKS are super easy to sharpen to razor edges, and maintaining the edge is no problem.

I do not have that particular blade but i do have a few multi tools by Victorinox i have been carrying the Spirit for over 6 years and i am very pleased. It see's harder use then most people are going to do it, (farming, equipment repair). Solid tool. Id buy anouther in a heart beat.

My first knife was a Victorinox SAK. I often carry an Alox Pioneer and have an Old Soldier and Farmer as well. The pioneer's blade is getting pretty gnarly from all the sharpening and scratch marks, haha. It has fairly poor edge retention compared to most modern steels and I end up having to give it a touch-up quite often (when it sees consistent use, that is).

I use the hook to tighten skate and boot laces works great. other than that, can't think of anything else.
