Victorinox Hiker vs. Farmer

I prefer the Farmer, alox handle, thicker blade, and better awl design are big plus. In the outdoor I don’t think I really need the small blade (I use the small blade mostly in office environment, or in public), phillip screwdriver, toothpick, and tweezer.

The lanyard attachment on the farmer is annoying, but slightly feels better after I file the sharp edge a little bit.

I have two of both lol, there two of my favorites, The fieldmaster is nice, (hiker with scissors and hook) But not as comfortable in the hand or pocket to me. I've used a hiker in the woods more than any other sak, and though I've been carrying a pioneer harvester last 6 months, I have to say the hiker is hard to beat, a lot of useful tools in a small package, the toot pick is handy, the tweezers and pin even more so! I like the sturdiness of alox, but I like the width of the handle better on the hiker over the farmer, feels better in hand to me, for some reason. As much as I love the farmer I'll have to say hiker!

I recently posted a similar thread. After all the feedback I got on the durability of the Fieldmaster, I am happy with it. I also love the trekker.

The scissors, saw, excellent flat ground blade and that phillips on the can opener are the most used.

desmobob, tell me about your corkscrew incident? I would like to know how it saved you. Thanks

DaleW pretty much summed it up... :D

I was waaaay back in the boondocks four-wheeling with a very pretty lady from the big city. We stopped at a scenic little lake and I pulled out a bottle of vino. It was one of those nights when everything was flowing... everything was going just right. --insert sound effect of mellow jazz playing-- I knew it was going to be a great evening.

Then, I realized I had no corkscrew. --insert sound effect of phonograph needle scratching loudly across record--

But then, I remembered I had a Vic Climber in the glove box of my truck. That put things back in the groove... and taught me just how important that SAK corkscrew can be. You didn't think this was going to be some silly and dramatic life-and-death kind of story, did you?

Stay sharp,
desmobob

Desmobob - I had the same incident occur to me many years ago. A bottle of wine, a beautiful woman, a nice remote location. Then panic strikes, no corkscrew!!!! A seldom used SAK was soon remembered and the night was saved. At the time, it felt like a life or death situation:)

Life or death? I thought it was a whole hell of a lot more serious than that!

I just ordered three Vic Huntsman models to stash in various places so I'll never have to experience that one moment of terror again!

You can also push the cork into the bottle - I've done it in a pinch.

:thumbup:Ive posted this on here before. The Electrician Plus is an Alox Farmer with a small sheepfoot blade instead of a can opener and no key ring bump to dig into your hand. I EDC'ed a Farmer for years until i found the E+. The little sheepfoot is kept razor sharp for detail work. I put a P-38 on the key ring to open cans. The Farmer went to college with my son. Check one out if you're a Farmer fan---KV

The Huntsman Plus is my EDC - I've carried it everywhere for years. The scissors get a lot of use.

I don't often use the corkscrew (though it's been handy a time or two!), but the mini-screwdriver in the corkscrew has kept my glasses together on more than one occasion. I also find the pin that's tucked behind the corkscrew handy for lifting out splinters, etc.

I like the sturdiness of the Farmer and its alox buddies, but I miss those little tools too much to carry it regularly or far afield. My Farmer has become my back-up knife in the daypack.

 That does sound like a model worth looking into! This thread is making me want to start collecting Vics....not something I can afford right now.:grumpy::)

I have both but prefer the farmer. As mentioned several times - the alox scales and thicker blade are the selling point for me. It has actually become my edc (along w/ Nitecore D10)

SAK Huntsman for EDC here. I make my own wood arrows. The bottle opener is a great pry bar for my cans of wood stain. The blade works great to strip poorly fletched or damaged feathers. I use the scissors or blade to cut strands of artificial sinew. I make self nocks and the saw works reasonably well in a pinch but I prefer my coping saw and sandpaper.

In the office, I use the blade as a letter opener and the scissors to trim my fingernails. It is also a therapy device, i.e. I sharpen the blade on my Spydie Sharpmaker to stay calm.

When hiking, the saw plus a gerber pocket ax, enables me to harvest fire wood. The back of the saw is a great fire steel striker.

The awl is handy to have to punch a hole in leather or cordura.

When stumping, the blade is not quite stout enough and a slippie is not the best choice to dig an arrow out of wood. So I carry a Buck 110 as well.

Now, if I can just figure out a use for that mystery hook.

It's a package carrier. go get a three gallon bottle of water, tie it up for carrying with some 550 cord, now carry it for one block in an ungloved hand, just by the one string of paracord.

Now hook the paracord on that hook. Carry for 3 blocks. See how much nicer that is?

As mentioned before, it's also good for tracing wires and pulling on stuff.

One odd thing, the one on my compact also has a fail file area, none of my other hooks have that.
