Victorinox Hunter- Any thoughts?

I EDC a Huntsman, but I'm thinking of switching to carrying a 2-knife combination, a red Vic Safari Trooper (a longer, thicker main blade, a better saw with a screwdriver/can opener tip, better longer awl, and longer corkscrew) and a Vic Ambassador (smaller thin blade, scissors, file, twezzers).

I've owned a Hunter for years. Before I got into collecting SAK's I only had a Huntsman and a Hunter. The Huntsman was my first SAK and was used a lot when I went camping in the UK and for EDC because the laws here don't allow a locker unless you have a good reason to carry one. I used the Hunter when I went on holidays abroad. My Hunter has been with me on many trips to Europe and the USA, often with the Huntsman riding shotgun. I've found it to be a very good knife. I can't really say if I prefer it to say the Rucksack, they are very similar, it depends if you like to have the second blade really, and I've not found that much of a problem in actual use. I prefer the OHOTrekker these days, though I did used to like to buy some wine when on holiday so that might tip me towards the Hunter or the Rucksack for those occasions.
I doubt that's helped you much has it? ;)

From the time that I posted this thread last year, I actually decided on buying a Trekker. The normal non-one-handed one. :) Through the time that I've had it, I've found that I've needed the Phillips way more than I've needed a corkscrew. Actually, I never really needed a corkscrew, and I've turned a couple of Phillips screws that can't be handled or reached by the can opener tip (screws depressed and inch or so beneath the surface). So I guess the Trekker was a good buy. :)

The Trekker is a great knife. I just noticed how old this thread but I'll comment on the Hunter anyway. A red handled Hunter was my first SAK. I got it years ago before they started putting that silly dear head print on them. I loved that knife and got a lot of use out of it. The gutting blade is sharp! Split my thumb wide open with it one day. It was great for cutting string, nylon webbing and other fabrics. I also prefer the sliding button lock to the more current liner locks. Alas, being young and dumb, I lost that knife somewhere and have always regretting not keeping a closer eye on it. One of these days I'll get another one. I'd love to find one NIB without the deer head.

I have the hunter.

What I like:

- its light
- contoured handle
- long knife
- long saw
- Knife blade lock
- skinning blade - I am treating this like my backup blade i.e. use main blade for most purposes and I always have a super sharp blade as a backup (it came shaving sharp)

Last time I was camping I just kept reaching for this baby. It was very useful.

What I don't like (these are marginal issues)

- no can opener - this is negligible as most cans I use have ring pulls
- no magnifying glass - No biggy

I am very happy with the Hunter.

Glad you like the Hunter, it's a great knife. It does have a can opener though, it's part of the combo tool.

Oh ok.. Have you used the can opener? The multi tool is quite different than the normal can opener and I assumed it was just a bottle opener. I'll have to test.

Thanks for the info :) Its good news..

I have a Trekker OH. I like the additional screwdrivers, phillips and slotted. And I don't have much use for a corkscrew. I'm not that sold on the one hand feature. I find it takes two hands to close it anyway. I like the locking large screw driver and I use the can opener more than any other blade. I ventilate many more beer cans with the can opener than I gut deer.:D

I have a Hunter and it's a great knife. I had mine modded so it also has a scissors and phillips driver layer in it. It's pretty much my perfect camping/hiking SAK.

I have, it works just like the regular can opener; just need to use a wee bit more force. I just used the combo tool on my Compact this evening.
