Victorinox Parcel Hook: Difficulty in Opening

Is it just me, or is anyone else having difficulty opening the parcel/multi-purpose hook on some of those Vic SAKs that have them? In the Super Tinker, it is placed right beside where the keyring juts out, making it reaaally hard to have a proper nail-hold on it. Due to the fact that you only get very little of your nail in there, it becomes a nailbreaker even though the hinge is very very well lubricated.

Anyone else having problems with this? I've recently just noticed this and it's quite turning me off.

On a side note, with the better positioning of the hook in the SwissChamp, i.e., not beside the keyring, it is easier to open this version.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Yeah but I just deal with it. :(

Being that it's probably the least used item on there for me, it's not that big of a deal.

I saw a Youtube video where some guy took a dremel tool and make a nail nick in it.

Thing is, I'm choosing whether to buy a Huntsman or an Explorer. The Huntsman has this problem because the hook is beside the keyring, while the Explorer doesn't have it because there is the phillips/magnifying lens layer in between the hook and the keyring. Other than the inline phillips, this is one of the reasons why I'm leaning towards the Explorer. Oh and also because I rarely go outdoors. I love the wood saw though but I use it mostly when I use wood for crafts.

I guess even if the hook is the least used tool in the knife (for most people at least... I use it a lot because for me, it can replace anything that needs the function of fingernails pulling on something... that's a few things at least), I don't want to have a tool in my knife that I can't properly access without risking breaking my nails or needing an extra tool to open it up. I guess it really just bothers me.

I've never really noticed any problem, then again,I've never had any real use for the hook.It would'nt keep me from buying a useful model because it had the parcel hook.I've edc'd a Climber(with hook)for the last couple of years, also have the Huntsman.

I just got a Climber today and, yes, it's pretty hard on the nail to open the hook. It's not a deal breaker for me or anything, but the placement near the key ring does make it difficult.

Also, how much weight can you carry with that thing. I saw a guy on YouTube talking about carrying 5 gallon buckets with it. Is that kind of weight likely to break the knife?

200# is almost hard to believe. That's a lot of stress on that little pivot point and on that aluminum liner. I'm not arguing about it, just kind of surprised.

I've never figured out a real use for the parcel hook - Anyone ever mod the thing into some else that serves an actual purpose?

I use the hook for pulling things that I normally pull with my fingernails but are a bit tough. I've also used it for gripping on other things that I need to pull. I guess it isn't really made for that specifically but most of the time, I find that discovering uses for a tool merely needs your creativity and the knowledge that the tool is available.

One of the best uses of the tool for me is for when you have a pen in your scales. You can put it underneath the opened hook, close the hook onto the pen and you have a body for the pen itself. Makes it far better for writing.

Some have used it as an makeshift hanger. Hehe.

But for a real nice mod on the hook, and since you were asking for one, here's an article found on SOSAKonline:

Creativity + Knowlege that the tool is available = Awesomeness

That's what I did to my compact. While I was at it, I modded the end of the hook to be a Phillps driver.

When I'm sitting down I hold the keyring up and against myself then I pull on the parcel hook tab and it's a lot easier to open

+1 ^
And usps and ups will probably snip the twine or whatever if you tried. So people were stuck getting creative with a lame tool that victorinox wont discontinue. Felix Immler has a video on various ways you can use it

it's no longer called the parcel hook by Victorinox. It's referred to as the multipurpose hook and how weak is someone that they struggle to open it. Really ? Please stop whining grumpy old men stuck in your bad marriages and complain about everything. FACTS
