So I've been wanting a scout/army pattern knife lately and this seems to be the best one available locally (I don't like buying knives online). My local army surplus store is all out of the classic US army pocketknife (the "demo" knife as they call it) at the moment so I thought I'd pick up one of these in the meantime. I could get a Vic Soldier, as my local shop has them on sale, but I dont want a knife that has been discontinued because I know I'll be hesistent about using it. So I guess I want you nuts to talk me into buying one!

Ok, get one man! Mine is in the mail right now, should be here in a couple of days! I got the red alox. Which one do you want?

Get a farmer. Very slightly thicker than pioneer/alox soldier, but adds the saw. The increased thickness is not much and actually feels good in the hand. Or just do like us nuts do and get em all! Thankfully they aren't expensive. Also consider the Wenger Standard Issue or S.I. Military spec like the vic soldier but has a lanyard bail. With some creative shopping you should be able to acquire a farmer, pioneer, alox soldier and wenger si for about 100 dollars. Then there are all the different colors... And also the cadets... Have fun

I would like the silver, but if they dont have it I have no problem with the red one.
I think the silver is cool to! I've been waiting on mine for a week now, I guess it's taken longer because I had my initials engraved on it. Should be here by Sat. though. Next will be the black alox, it looks sweet as well!

I like the Pioneer and Soldier lots . You won't go wrong , with either a Pioneer of a Farmer .

The Victorinox alox series and the Wenger SI are all great knives, you can't go wrong with any of those.

If the alox Victorinox Soldier is on sale at your local shop, buy 2 of them, so that you have a backup. They are excellent pocket knives and although they are discontinued, they are not very expensive yet.

when were the soldiers discontinued? or is this a specific model the alox one?

Take note, digidude - this is right on the money. The Wenger or any of the Victorinox alox knives are damn near pocketknife perfection, leagues ahead of the US army demo knife, IMO. By the way, with a little patience, you can get some great deals on these knives on a popular online auction site.

Get a Soldier. It's THE Swiss Army knife. Use it. I just got a Soldier myself because it is an icon in the knife world. The new army knife has no soul/history.

Yeah I forgot to mention that I originally wanted to buy the Wenger SI, but cant find it locally, so thats why I'm considering the pioneer. I had thought about buiyng 2 Soldiers (the price is 23$ btw) but I don't really have a lot of cash and I'd rather just get one user.

Thanks for the repiles!

I got ya'. Just a heads up, knifecenter.com has both the Soldier & the SI in stock right now. I just ordered the Soldier from them the other day for around $30.00 shipped. I think the SI was about the same cost.
Best regards!

If you find you like whichever you choose , be sure to buy a second as a backup .

I have a red and a black Vic Pioneer. They are quickly becoming my favorite/most carried knives. Well made, solid construction, relatively thin, with a good size blade. Get whichever color is available. If you like it as much as I think you will you'll probably end up getting one of each color.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to use the Alox Soldier myself; it's still a knife made to be used, there are thousands of them out there, it's the real Swiss Army deal, you can get it right now for a very good price. Why look for anything else?

Consider the Pioneer instead of the Soldier. It has a lanyard ring, which accepts a belt hanger, the only way I ever carry a pocket knife (Rambler or Micra in the watch pocket excepted). It is easier on the fabric, doesn't bounce against your leg and reduces felt weight to nothing. However, after trying out a belt hanger and deciding it isn't for you, the mounting stud can be dremeled off and you have a Soldier.
