Victorinox ranger grip

I have a few of them, and don't have any blade play on any of 'em. Shiny, one big thing to consider (and it's the reason why many folks buy the RangerGrips): it's the largest pocket knife based saw you can buy. It's nearly four inches long, and absolutely chews through wood of most types. Also, it's endorsed by the Man himself Felix Immler, so that was all I needed to know.

All of that said, keep in mind that they are a larger knife, and they don't have pocket clips. Other than that, they're great.

That's exactly what drew me to the ranger grip, the saw. I took it out yesterday with the huntsman and compared them, it's extra length is noticeable! It is bulky, and I wish it had a clip, I'll be fixing that 😉

Having a silky saw, I really didn't need the grip, but of course I bought it anyway ha! I'm primarily looking to feed my Ti Firebox nano which can be done with no tools at all, but is made easier on longer cook times with bigger, sawn and split pieces for an almost Swedish fire torch like setup in the box. I just like options.

Speaking of Felix, the boys and I have been binging his videos, talk about a sak addict... lol I love it. You should see my huntsman setup, sewing needle in the pin slot, fire tinder in the corkscrew (covered by shrink tube) along with mini driver. I'm waiting on the plus scales which should be here in a few days, along with the firesteel to replace the toothpick. Oh and the pen. God bless, I fell down a sak rabbit hole 🤣

Anyway, on the ranger grip, it's lock up is tighter than the trekker models, While at smkw the other day I handled a bunch of knives and got to wiggle them. No question, the rangers were tighter than the trekkers. I still may pick up another trekker (one hand forester actually) and snag some swiss bianco plus scales for it.

I never realized you were into swiss army knives, they are such a cool, useful and inexpensive knife (compared to other knives anyway)

HA! Are you even a knife guy if you aren't into SAKs? LOL But seriously, be careful, they are tremendous knives given the price point, and there's a pretty wide range of covers/ALOX colors these days. You'll be able to outfit your boys if you so choose with knives that are perfect for them. I recommend checking out SMKW, KnifeCenter, and one of my favorites Swiss Knife Shop. I know you just came from SMKW, but they have a huge collection (like the other guys I mentioned) of exclusive scales on several of the most popular models. Could be neat gifts for your sons. It has certainly worked on me, I have a fairly large collection, because Victorinox keeps roping me in with new colors, editions, etc. They are tremendous knives and I've got at LEAST two with me at any given time. As I tell anyone with a new (or returning!) interest in Victorinox: welcome home!

Felix Immler's channel is an absolute national treasure for tips and ideas on how to enjoy your time in the woods just a little more with the right tools at your side. By the way, heads up for you: he has a few books out as well, which are essentially books of projects and fun things to do with your SAKs, which I could not recommend more highly. These would be solid gold for you, especially since you have your boys to do these things with!! Lots of pics, easy to follow explanations, and they're smaller books dimension-wise so they could be stuffed in a pack for a dayhike.

Onto the comparison between the Trekker variants and the RangerGrip models. I have to agree with your findings, in that the RangerGrip models are a bit more solid overall and I think it's because it's such a newer platform. I've got one or two old Trekker models bumming around here somewhere and they are all....well, not as confidence inducing as the larger RangerGrips are. I'll try to get a picture up later of the few I currently have.

And he's just such a freaking nice guy, you can't help but watch his videos.

HELLOOOOO YOUTUBE!

On the other end of the spectrum is that Jon Gadget guy who's cold, unfriendly, and seems to believe the trick for garnering views is trashing on a staple in the knife community.

Solid info, much appreciated. Ill have to check out his books! My oldest wants every knife I have already so I know exactly what to get him for gifts. He's got plenty of knives already, but since I've gotten on the sak kick he has too. I'm heavily considering getting into modding them just for myself and the kids, I'm eye balling the jig to hold the 91mm models together for reassembly.

Oh god, I cannot STAND Jon Gadget. Dude was definitely high on his own supply, that one video where he talked about going to Victorinox headquarters and asking everyone if they'd watched his videos. "Why aren't you innovating??!"

Dude, they've sold more knives than any other company in the history of the entire world and continue to do so. I think they're fine, get outta here.

I will keep an eye out for your project knives! Plenty of folks on Etsy seem to turn a brisk trade modifying SAKS, so there's definitely some legs there.

If I get around to doing it I'll post some pics. Nothing crazy, just making the combo of tools I want on certain models. I'm thinking of a ranger because it adds the file but I don't need the extra back tools

The saws on the SAKs below are 3, 3.5, and 4 inches. It's that last half inch that counts. No, that's not what she said

Saws on SAKs and Schrades cut push and pull, the Leatherman has a "cut on pull only", the latter not being ideal, yet better than nothing.

I broke a leatherman saw pushing it back into the cut. It takes a conscious effort to use the leatherman saw in a manner that is best for it's design, at least for me, because I am used to the vic saws. Nice collection

Oh, I've never broken a vic saw.
