Victorinox Spartan vs Pioneer

If you prefer a bail to the split ring, you could grab Wenger's Standard Soldier instead of a Vic Pioneer. And have yourself a pie e of cutlery history before they cease production.

Of the two listed, Pioneer. I own a Pioneer Rancher and an Electrician. Nice fairly large knives, but thin and carry flat, sturdy, and classy looking in the silver Alox.

I have never, ever needed a corkscrew on a pocket knife. If I am drinking wine, I am either at home or at a restaurant. At home I have a dedicated corkscrew. Restaurants open the bottles for you. Same with beer, so I never need a bottle opener. Can opener, same. I can't ever think of a time when I needed to open a can with a pocket knife. Your lifestyle may be dramatically different than mine so you may need all of those features.

I happen to carry one or more multitools with me so I don't need as many gadgets on my knives.

Edmundo, I know this is a wiseguy answer, but as between the Spartan and the Pioneer, I would go with the Compact, Climber or Super Tinker. The Climber, for example, is a Spartan + scissor and hook. The Compact may have the most utility of any of the 2-layer SAKs. There are choices, but that also can send you down the path of adding tools and layers, and eventually you end up with a 4-layer Explorer Plus.

I'm partial to the cellidor (red scales) models, because to me they are the "real" SAKs, plus you have options like tweezer, toothpick, pen and pin, which you don't get with Alox. But I fully understand the Alox attraction, because they are thin and very well constructed.

2 front pockets, 2 hands, 2 great SAK choices. Coincidence?

Get one for each pocket.

I definitely don't want to fall into the trap of carrying an entire toolbox in my pocket. I did some research based on what Scruffuk said and found lots about the true swiss army knife and found that the Pioneer is the real descendent of the knife that was issued to the military. I think I will get both, pocket the pioneer and have the spartan in the car.. you never know when you will need a corkscrew for an emergency wine bottle. I did see the compact but the scissors are not something I need as long as I have a sharp blade with me (to each their own though). I'll pocket the pioneer and grind off the key ring though, since Soliders are expensive to get but I like a smooth pocket knife.

Does anyone here EDC a pioneer? I would love to see some pictures of how they are doing.. Thank you everyone for your input

Glad to be of help somehow Edmundo.

All the best with your new aquisitions.

I certainly will be very happy with it. I found a local store with at least 5 SI's on clearance So I got one for backup and got the pioneer for everyday carry. Beautiful pocket tool.
