Victorinox Spartan vs Pioneer

The Spartan won't be smaller than the Pioneer, just a hair shorter. But the Sportsman is pretty much my favorite non-Alox SAK for the reasons you mentioned, it's a Cadet with Plus scales and back tools!

I'd think much harder about choosing between a Sportsman and a Pioneer.

Interesting post. I looked at my black-scaled Spartan (only one instantly available at the time, about 10 years ago) for the pin hole and it is there! Thank you for that neat tip. I found my first Victorinox as a boy in 1965 and have carried one, and used for just about everything, ever since. There was a model with the Spartan features (corkscrew/awl/2 blades/can opener/bottle opener) but slightly smaller at one time but I haven't been able to find one of those since the late 70s. Folks can argue till they are blue in the face about 'which pocket tool is most useful' but I won't buy anything but Vic and distinctly remember feeling like a 'man without pants' when some SOB stole mine while out in the jungle of Colombia 35 years ago. Couldn't even cut some rope, thread a string nor open a can of beans that night!
I was told that Victorinox picked up or propped up Wenger after the travel sales fiasco following 9/11 but Vic is by far still the very best.
Philips blade I have never had a use for (can opener tip does that plus Robertsons (square drive)) and you'd be surprised what all can be done with an awl and a corkscrew. Saw blade is also something I have never subscribed to. That feature is handier than a pocket in a shirt when you want to part the rib cage of a deer in order to remove the heart and lungs, but takes up valuable pocket space and weight otherwise.
