Victorinox Swiss Army Knife or a Multi Tool?

What about a LM Squirt? Pocket/keychain sized tool with decent pliers. Small package and only 2 oz. Next size up would be the Juice.

For me, a set of decent pliers is a must in a multitool for fishing and such. I have a Leatherman Rebar, Leatherman Squirt, and a SAK Huntsman and I usually find myself reaching for the Squirt the most while fishing. If you don't expect to use pliers much, go with the SAK.

I was going over some of your post this afternoon and then looking them up online when all of a sudden I remember that I do have a Leatherman tucked away that I have forgot about. It was given to me for free many years ago for buying a bunch of motorcycle parts.

I guess since I have it that my search is over.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have a Leatherman Juice S2 in my tackle box. I use the pliers all the time to get hooks out of fish. The scissors are nice for what they are.

I have an original Swiss Tool, but stopped carrying it due to the weight. Never had the opportunity to check out the Spirit to compare weights with the Leatherman tools. However, there are Victorinox knife models that have a very small pair of pliers, like the Deluxe Tinkerer. The full sized needle nose pliers proved more useful, to me. The Deluxe Tinkerer pliers just don't have the reach/grip for most things.

I would get a Juice S2 for the tackle box and a Micra. Put the MIcra on a lanyard around your neck for cutting line. It will actually handle 90% of the repairs.

If you are also a shooter (with an AR) then the AR (multi) toll made by Real Avid is the way to go. Standard multi tool design, but with AR specific tools and a 440c blade...

I will most likely own one by July... *sigh

I have more MTs than I care to admit to and I find that each has its pros and cons (usual story). I find the SOG pocket power plier great for the pliers (compound gears, precise grip) and I find the scissors on my LM Wave II to be excellent. I carry a LM Pulse (disconned) because it has scissors and is a relatively compact tool but it still features locking tools and its all stainless.

I am now looking at getting a SAK Super Tinker as well, for pocket carry. God only knows why, I guess I am sick and need help!

Depends on what you really need/want. If the primary purpose will be as a knife, get a SAK. Multitoools make poor choices if your primary need is a knife. So much so I quit carrying a multitool quite a few years ago.

The fact that you will be carrying it in a pouch/pack broadens your horizons significantly. Normally I would say LM on the belt and SAK for the pocket and, depending on garb and intended activities so with the one that fits that day best. For a pouch/pack - especially one dedicated for a specific activity, then find the tool (and bits) that works best for the accouterments that will need tinkering and go from there.

While my preference is for a LM on the belt or a SAK in the pocket, I do have to say that the Victorinox offerings of multi-tool size are quite nice.

I carry a Leatherman Wave and an Officer SAK in my tackle box. Between the two they have a nice assortment of tools.

I'm not big on SAKs, I carry either a Leatherman Squirt P4 or a Charge tti when I need more serious things done.

I recommend the Leatherman Wave / Charge design just for the easy access to the knife (knives), and the tti for the reduced weight (it's still heavy as a brick, but at least they tried), the seatbelt cutter , and the S30v blade (I'm not a steel snob either, but you'll be thankful for it if you plan to do 0 maintenance to your tool).

The Charge's price is steep for many, and it will basically do what a wave does. However, I recommend getting a second hand one that is in good condition rather than a new SAK or multitool. In my oppinion well worth it.

SAKs I find are more recognizable and less agressive looking. I know this because a r-tard "skinhead" once mistook my Charge for a balisong (yes) and I almost got into trouble. What I mean to say I guess is that SAKs look less intimidating to the average joe, although the tools are harder to access, and impossible if you have short or very short nails.

I also hear victorinox multitools are excellent, but I rather not talk about that because I've never even seen one in person and I dont like to repeat like a parrot what you can easily read elsewhere.

I carry a Leatherman Micra when fishing in high mountain lakes, from a float tube, for trout. The excellent scissors are the most used tool and I've never had a situation involving fishing gear (minor reel repairs, mostly) that the Micra couldn't handle. I also carry dedicated fishing pliers in a storage compartment on the float tube, along with other necessities.

Things I really need or have gotten used to always having fishing (I do trout mostly), are small to medium sized needle nose pliers, long needle for picking knots (though I usually cut the line), and a SAK. I seldom use the knife fishing, but it is there if I need it. I catch & release almost all the time. The multi-tool is inconvenient for using as your needle nosed pliers fishing. It's great for reel repairs or odds and ends, but not extremely common or regular usage (like 10 or 20 times a day). I keep reel lube back in the truck along with a spare rod and reel ready to go. And yes, reels break at the most unexpected times and you can break a rod if you are not careful or you fall on it. The SAK is for first usage which defaults to the multi-tool for something more involved. Good luck fishing.

Victorinox offers lifetime warranty by the way.

That is with no questions asked in my experience.

I always liked the Swiss Explorer and I have had a few leatherman if you want light go with a Sak .Personally I find leatherman a little bulky but very useful ,so basically it's what you prefer

Once I bought the Victorinox Spirit I never went back to Leatherman. Something about Swiss engineering I really like. Plus, is there a sexier looking multi-tool on the planet than this one? I think not.

Completely agree with this. My swisstool spirit x kicked the charge tti to glove box duty.

I carry these to like them both for different reasons. They are both compact and have a nice assortment of tools but if you need pliers I vote the leatherman and if you don't have to worry about weight or bulk the Charge. If you want something you can pocket as opposed to wear on your belt both of these are pretty good. I also found the skeletool to be very hand, I lost mine but keeping thinking I need to replace it.

Now that you mention it, that is pretty sexy. I never knew SAK had that kind of a line. thanks for educating me.
