VICTORINOX vs WENGER SAK

I definitely feel the Victorinox scissors cut better than the Wengers. The Wenger's spring might be stronger, but the scissors on them nods up and down, and the little serrations make a more ragged cut than the Vic's. And the serrated portion seems not as sharp as the Vic's plain edged scissors.

I own many Vic's and about 5 Wengers and the Vic's are better quality, though Wenger is still a quality product. Vic's are just superior, though.

As to the Swisschamp being a "tactical"...I was at the store, magazine browsing and saw a photo in a magazine (I think it was called "Bizarre") this month that has a page of photos of stab wounds. One photo shows a stomach with what looks to be the Swisschamp sticking out of it, along with an awl. Pretty gruesome.

I like Vix's over Wengers. Maybe it's just me, but I think the Victorinox's are obviously higher in quality. I would consider a Wenger only if the combination of tools was exactly to my liking and was not--nor never will be--available on a Vix.

I have alot of respect for those who have tried both and prefer one over the other.
But I can't understand the folks who say statements like "I've never tried brand Wenger but I think brand Victorinox is superior"...talk about herd mentality!

Allen.

The other tool I'd love to see on a SAK would (as someone else mentioned) be a good marlin spike! Haven't seen a SAK with one of those.
Matthew, some of the locking blade SAKs do have a marlin spike (with sewing eye). Check out the Work Champ XL, Helmsman and Skipper models at: http://www.pizzini.at/shop/en-us/dept_27.html, just scroll down to the pics of these models. Heres another pic: http://swissarmy.com/acb/showdetl.cfm?&DID=6&Product_ID=1875&CATID=4&PartNumber=53664
They call this a shackle opener (or key) with marlin spike in the Victorinox catalog. My Hunter model SAK has a marlin spike as well. I don't know what a shakle opener is, or how that feature works.

I have both brands- 2 or so wengers and about 15 vics. I always knew in my mind that the wengers felt "cheaper" than the vics. on one of the wengers, the scissors are already wiggly at the rivet where the 2 blades connect adn I never ever used the scissors on anything more than a string or 2!! But the Vics are strong as ever even the little mini one which was my first real knife ever, still perfect condition minus scratches. I never noticed it until now but I always have a vic tinker on my computer desk and use it almost every day without realizing it. never lets me down:)

Same here...

I've owned/used both....a lot of the comments seem to be about the scissors and polish...nitpicky if you ask me. One that does hold merit is some's argument that the blade on the Wenger is slightly inferior. Cannont comment on that as both my Victorinox's and Wengers always seemed to need sharpening after the same amount of time, but I wasn't exactly doing a scientific test either...

I'm willing to bet teh "average user" - ie NOT a knife enthusiast - wouldn't notice most of the differences you guys notice. Such as the polish on the Wenger is supposedly inferior and the scissors don't have enough spring power.

Scissors do not matter to me because I don't/wouldn't use/have them:)...and well, I never noticed the polish (mine get used thoroughly anyway). IMO, you can't go wrong with either but according to the majority, the Victorinox does seem to be slightly better. If you are to believe everyone's word as fact, I say go with Victorinox becuase as far as models go, they are both quite similar.

It's almost the Hatfields and the McCoys the way these two companies have fans, but most nods do go to Victorinox, of which I do favour myself. I've owned both and just find that Vic to put out a better product. And their emblem is a tad more refined and nice how they inset them into the scales, not just painted on, now I know that there are some models with nylon scales that they do paint on, but most have the metal emblem within. A small thing, doesn't help cut better but it's classy to me and shows more thought and care to their product.

As to the Hook thingy, I actually got to use it on a package that was wrapped with wire, go figure! Worked well...

I'm not a fan of the BIG knives from either source, as they are too unweildy, the Super Champ is just way to thick for practical purposes for me, though a good friend sent me a Wenger version and that rides every day in my car's glove box...just in case!

So I carry;
Swiss Army Tool, excellent but agreeably on the heavy side
Executive
Cowboy, with locking blade
Super Tinker, with magnifer and a phillips that comes out straight..
Mechanic, pliers on this one, my wife has used it to pull out several loose teeth from my young daughters, small enough to just reach in and give a yank! kids hate that knife! :D
Florist, with a single blade, chiseledge wharncliff!

Good stuff all...

Warthog:
I don't think comments on the respective scissors are being picky; I use the scissors on my SAK's not for heavy things, but they do get used a LOT, so yes, quality does matter. It also goes to show the overall quality that is put into each product...I also prefer Vic's can opener to the Wenger's version. The edges on my Vic's stay sharper a bit longer and take a better/stronger edge. The backsprings on the Vic's are stronger; I like my SAK's to snap shut with authority. The Vic's are more streamlined and feel less clunky to me during carry/use. I realize some of these things matter little to overall utility, but if I'm going to carry and use a tool, I need to have confidence in its overall quality, and the Vic's have proven themselves to be plenty reliable for what they're made for. I have nearly worn out a Wenger while a comparable Vic model was used and carried for many years longer and is still in better shape...not scientific testing, by any means, but proof to me, personally.

My WENGER broke!!!!!!! It was returned. O.K. Victorinox wins this discussion! Thanks for your participation.

I hate to hear that your knife broke. I've always had great success with Wengers (and Vics too for that matter).
Please tell us all what happen to your knife and what you were doing at the time.

Good luck,
Allen (the lone defender of Wenger).

Allen C,
I was using the scissors to cut leather. The scissors twisted bending the spring ever so slightly. I tried to bend the spring back into place but it would'nt work right. I believe that if the scissors had been sharper and with a wider mouth I probably would'nt have had to use so much pressure to get through the leather. Some people made a good point that with the Vict you could put in a new spring.

Just in case anyone is wondering, I am not going to try and cut this leather with my Vict scissors. One broken SAK is enough.

There's a place for SAK's and for multi-tools. I needed strong shears.

Still waiting to hear about the Vict Voyager...........

Thanks,

TACMAN, Now you have to try the Vic on the leather.
How else will you know which SAK has the better scissors?

You can't fairly say the Victorinox is better if the Wenger failed at a task the Vic never tried.

Good luck,
Allen.

Allen,
Your absolutely correct, I SHOULD try my Vict scissors on that same piece of leather. But, being somewhat intelligent I tend to learn from my stupid mistakes. If I was really intelligent I would have never attmpted to cut that leather with my Wenger scissors or with any other SAK scissors in the first place!

After all, Thats what I paid good money for Sears Craftsman shears.

The reason why Vict won discussion was due to the shear number of positive votes for that brand. I still feel that the Wenger is a very good tool, just a breath away from Vict......... but not quite there.

UNRELATED

I called Vict today asking whether or not the Voyager was waterproof. They said that under no circumstances should it be immersed in water.
And that if I sent it in to them that they would completely clean it when and if the inside got gunked up. I think that I'll pass on this idea fo now, although I really like the idea of having a watch on my SAK.

I'll let everyone know how "THE HOOK" and I made out. If you don't hear from me it will mean that I've been hospitalized for one of the following emergency situations: a) I cut a finger off while opening the can with "blinding speed", b) I stabbed myself while "skillfully" punching a hole in the lid, c) I recieved third degree burns while "HOOKING" the can or finally, d) my wife committed me to mental institution .....

Later,
TACMAN
:D

The OP deleted your point of reference! :-P
