Not meant to be a newbie thread. I own about 6 victrinoxes-mainly locking blades. Some of the new Wengers with "ergonomic" handles look interesting. Any opinions? Thanks.

If you're talking about the new Wenger Rangers I don't think you'll be disappointed. They feel 'different' to Vics but are not any less quality IMO. They are however BIG! Much more than the extra 9mm of length might suggest. There are some great comparison shots to be seen here:

If you mean the smaller 85mm Wengers then I can't tell you first hand as I haven't handled them (all mine are older and non-ergo), but I've not heard anything bad about them. As above I suspect they will just feel 'different'.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to BF. I haven't bought any new Wengers in years. I don't know about a difference in overall quality, but I prefer the can opener on the Victorinox.

There's not a noticeable difference in quality, but the pliers on Wengers are better in my opinion. A victorinox has a different feel though.

Bottom line: good either way.

I prefer Rangers over Vics 110mm.
The reason being is that the 110mm series are too big to EDC anyway and will probably be carried in a backpack or rucksack. In that situation I would prefer the extra 9mm of blade.

Welcome to the forum and good first question! ;)

I've read in the past, before the "merge" their was some problems with Wengers, nothing bad but noticeable to some but since the merge/buy-out/assistance/whatever, the new line-ups Wenger has put out have made lots of happy people out there (including me :D )

I don't think you'll be disappointed! Now I like and want them all LOL

Personally I prefer most Vic models. Just a personal preference, and I am not even sure why. :)

Same here, but I know why. When you hold Vic, they just feel more solid and becouse of high polished metal it feels as if you are holding high quality surgical tool.

I have both Victorinox and Wenger SAK's. In my opinion there is not really a difference in quality, but there certainly is a difference in feeling.

The big Wenger SAK's (Ranger-series) are much bigger than the big Victorinox SAK's (111mm-series). The traditional Wenger SAK's are smaller than the traditional Victorinox SAK's. Also some tools are implemented in a different way. The main blade on the traditional Wenger has a different shape than the one on the Victorinox. The biggest different tool is probably the can opener. Just to mention some differences.

I prefer the Victorinox knives, mainly because I am used to it and I prefer the Victorinox can opener, which I use a lot when camping and hiking. But I prefer the Wenger SI above the Victorinox Soldier for outdoor use, because it has a bail on which a lanyard can be attached.

Hi,

I have an EVO 10 as my sole Wenger. I really like the ergonomic scales. Very comfortable and secure in my hand.

But, the tool selection isn't what I want in that model. Particularly the older style can opener. I like and use the combo-tool on my Vics. But I do tend to like the just slightly thinner blades of the Wenger. And generally speaking, I find the EVO to feel a bit lighter in construction.

ive had a few minor issues with wenger over the years, but not one with vic, i had a few wengers arrive with cracked scales and two with tools that wouldnt nest completely, one of them, the blade stuck out a good eighth of an inch from the handle

I've only own a wenger trekker before and I own several victorinoxs. I haven't had any problems with my wenger but the build quality of it feels lower than vic's. The vics seems to be built better. The vics have higer tolerances and you really get a snap when the slip koint in a vic activates. Hard to explain but I will not buy another wenger again as long as victorinoxes are still made.

Not that it's a bad knife, I just perfer Victorinox. Like 99% of all swiss army knives they are in expensive so I'd pick up one of those egros and see how you like it.

Yeah, I have to agree that I got my first Vic because I didn't like the Wenger model's feel, but then I started collecting SAKs and made the choice to collect JUST Vic's, because I couldnt really afford to collect both companies models :)

I sharpened folks' knives in Iraq, I gotta say the Vic is hands down a better deal. The steel, springs, everything. I had the chance to "win" a Wenger, didn't even bother.
The thing that surprised me was the issue versions even though there made to the same specs, there the Wenger is hands down better. As a bonus it comes with a bail.
Even so if I had to choose between a Vic pioneer, and issue Wenger I'd take the Vic.

the only Wenger I own is a SI. While it is a good knife , compared side by side with an alox Vic Soldier the Vic is just better finished. IMO

I have the vic muti-tool. I have beaten the living hell out of it and I would not trade it for all of the tea in china. the blades sharpens up really fast just on the sticks and hold up really good.

I prefer Vics . I know the issues like weak backsprings have been addressed , I just prefer Vics .

Chris

Again, thanks to all for the replies and feedbacks. I may pick up just ONE larger Wenger to satisfy my curiosity if I can find a good sale price. I love the members' willingness to help out on the different forums. It has saved me time and money.
