victrinox quality vs wenger

the only Wenger I own is a SI. While it is a good knife , compared side by side with an alox Vic Soldier the Vic is just better finished. IMO

I couldn't care less about the finish (what it looks like). If I needed a hard use knife but couldn't get a Vic, I'd have no problem getting the issue Wenger.
If you think of it, a hard use knife ai't gonna look nice very long anyway.;)

so are you saying if you have 2 knives of equal quality and one looks better finished than the other, you'll chose the less finished one?

If you are particularly interested in locking SAK's, it looks like Wenger is phasing locks into some of their ordinary sized 3.25" knives.

The locking knives have an S in the model number.

These locks have been in that size knife for at least 10 years now, as I've owned one(think it was called the backpacker) since my soon-to-be 11 year old son was born. I've often wondered why Victorinox didn't bring this feature onto some of their products. I think it would be a huge seller.

All things being equal, I'd take either. The nice one will be used as hard as the "ugly" one, so apearance isn't an issue.

...of course you'd take the "better finished"; but if the uglier one was discounted, i'd absolutely go ugly...

this thread is numbing; they're both SAK's, owed by the same parent, and quality is equal...

my first swiss knife was a wenger -camper like with the nail file and scissors

scales came off after much abuse-havent had this happen to Vics but none were quite as old or subject to the abuses of a 9 year old either-bails were not as sturdy as VIc bails either

have wenger tool chest-huge with plastic compass
and whatever thier equivalent to the champion was
and a couple of classic types -one with brushed metal scales
and
one early "ranger" style called the EVEREST-has pliers, saw, phillips

and i have a stupid number of VICS of all sizes and types-

i generally concur that wenger and vic are close

but

i think that Vics seem to

sharpen better -it seems wneger steel is either harder or more brittle-in both hand and mechanical sharpening my VIcs just seem to take an edge more easily and keep it

and Vics have better 'extras' -things like nicer springs in scissors (altho wenger scissors, the serrated versions are great) -tweezers and toothpicks seem to appear more frequently on vics than wengers-they seem to fit more functions into single blades as i perceive things

you should buy one of each and make your own call

and i agree that the Wenger lock backs like my everest are simply too large to comfortably carry in a pocket-and heavy too (mine at least)
while larger than the Vics-i far prefer my Vic lock backs -old style with slide, new styles with thumb hole -all are more comfortable-the exception being my Vic rescue knife which is also just about too big and heavy to comfortably carry in a pocket-(not to mention some of its tools are not meant for anything but car rescue)
