VIDEO: Cold Steel Natchez Bowie overview.

You said it man, I was concerned that the handle might be a little too slim for the size of knife but the proportions are just right. It looks round in the pics but its actually rectangular so it affords a pretty good grip.

Mine has been carried in a Southern Comfort sheath so it has a few kydex scratches unfortunately but if you look past them the polish job on this sucker is just phenomenal. I've been working it over with Flitz to minimize the scratches and it just gleams now. Pure eye candy.

But the real surprise is the liveliness in the hand. For this size knife it feels a LOT lighter than, say, my Battle Mistress. I guess the huge clip and cable tang has something to do with that. All good considering it is 100% pure fighter.

I really dig the fittings on the handle too. The way the guard is blended into the handle is really nice. And the pommel is very classy. I think CS did a GREAT job with this one.

Nice score. :D

well mr ankerson, sir, thanks to you - look what turned up yesterday. :d

congrats..........a cool screensaver.

I'm torn between the Natchez and the San Mai Laredo Bowie. The Natchez probably isn't much of a chopper, but DAMN what a knife.

With a 12 inch blade and a wide tall blade, you will be able to chop just fine. I bet it will outchop most stuff. Fast, with a high flat grind, and a wide blade. Where it will suffer is in batonning. That sharp top clip will hinder you there.

I really do want one of those Natchez bowies.

Batoning with a cable tang knife is probably unwise.

Too bad it is a Cold steel, and made with low end stainless, and vastly overpriced, because it looks nice.

VG-1 is hardly low end Steel. ;)

Actually, it is pretty low end. Not the worst steel, but not premium, and certainly not worth the price increase. (Carrying on the legacy of their laminated AUS-8 of previous years.) Every other laminated steel I have seen has a premium steel for a core. Only CS orders low to middlin stainless.

For a $350 or so Bowie with a 11.5" blade and Laminated steel it's not bad at all. ;)

AUS8 and VG-1 are both tough and well proven steels and CS makes sure the heat treatment is done right.

I really don't see this as a chopper. To my mind it is a pure fighter and beyond that a knife to own for the sheer joy of it. I'm no steel expert but I feel quite certain that this knife could do some serious damage to living tissue if the situation demanded that it be used for that purpose. The edge is extremely sharp along its entire length.

As to the price paid, that is a contentious issue around here. I try to purchase on the second hand market for a variety of reasons but truth be told these do not come up very often used.

I was just fortunate that one was available at a time when I happened to have some money to spend. I could have purchased any number of other knives that would have been more 'sensible' (as a friend keeps pointing out to me).

But sometimes you have to forget sensible and just go with your heart. I love traditional style bowies and there are very few made by production companies that come close to the dimensions and materials on offer here. I would venture to say that the Natchez is unique in that regard.

You can always get a custom made one, of course, but that will cost you probably twice the price of a Natchez, which is beyond the reach of most.

Nice Vid.

I picked mine up for $299 from the Cutlery Shope when they were first introduced and I still havn't brought myself to taking it out in the sticks with me. I'd love to pound on it but at the same time the build quality, fit and finish is so nice that I just can't bring myself to do it. Having pounded on other similar knives, like the Laredo, San Mai TM, and Recon Scout, I can practically guarantee that it will excel at chopping. Since I have plenty of "users" already, I might just keep the Natchez pretty. :)
