*VIDEO* Ever used a cheap sharpener then shaved your face with the knife?...? I have

Yes... that is a Sog Trident Monogram, my user.....
Easily, not the best knife to try it with but I like a challenge.

IT really makes me question the whole concept of stepping away from bench stones to spend the insanely steep price for a wicked edge.

Nice video. I also own a SOG and other brands in AUS-8, blades of which I can get ridiculously sharp. I also use bench stones and a strop. Namely a combo 600/1000, a 3000 synthetic japanese whetstone, and a 10000 of the same brand. I usually only use the 10000 for my straight razor, but on occasion I will polish my soft steels on it. This stone combo and a strop gives me crazy sharp edges.

I think I may have to reprofile one of my AUS-8 blades and try to shave with it!

Cool and interesting! Thanks for the video.
Anytime man!!!

AUS-8 sure can take a fine edge... Honestly, rather easily. I did this on a $24.99 Walmart special smiths triangular bench stone set to prove a point... I am looking forward to acquiring some Japanese wet stones in the future as well, I have obviously proven I can at least find a "workable" edge on bench stones. Where did you pickup your stones? How do you like them?

I stropped this with my Knives Plus strop which honestly, has blown me away.

Entertaining video, but I kept thinking how my shaky hands would result in me trying that and getting one failure. It makes me wonder if I can do that with my Worksharp edges, though.

I have honestly seen a worksharp DESTROY edges before... some guys swear by them, I've seen them tear up a blade however, operator error can cause alot these days. For what it's worth, the edge on this monogram even had a few chips near the tip however, would cut through phonebook paper like a laser beam, no hesitation even at the slowest drag.

Bah, a dummy can even butcher an edge on an Edge Pro or Wicked Edge. I used my belt sander almost daily for a year, so I would hope I know how to not butcher an edge! Sounds like I might need to sharpen up a junker and send you it to see my work...

Well, I was kidding about the last part, but some constructive criticism could be helpful. I'm sure I will trade with an avid sharpener at some point, but all of the feedback I have gotten thus far was good.

Try bench stones man, it sounds crazy but it's instantly rewarding the first edge you get sharp... You did that with your bare hands and a piece of rock... It's exhilarating.

Knowing how to sharpen (I'm not so great) will get you better results then spending 500$ and being clueless. A family friend of mine can sharpen a knife to pop hairs without any proper sharpening tools. It's all about technique.

Ignorance incoming, sorry...

When you say bench stone do you mean like an electric bench stone? My father has one in his workshop and I (just me personally) would fear taking any of my folders to it, for fear of wearing away the edge too much too fast.

That's awesome if it works for you though.

The sharpening system he is refurrig too is diamond stones. It's a synthetic that has diamond dust attached to it gives similar results to traditional Japanese wet stones.

Ah, okay. That's actually what I do, as well. I guess when I hear bench stone I incorrectly start thinking "bench grinder."

No such thing as a stupid question!
The system is just three stones as he mentioned which sit on a platform and you manually draw the knife across them.

I see where your coming from, if you had a leather belt and stripping compound you could use the belt grinder too though.

You used all 3 of the Smiths Triangle stones just before making this video? Why not make a video of the sharpening itself? I'm sure it would be welcomed, and more popular than the results video - You'll have to excuse my skepticism, but I find it a little hard to believe you made a razor with the Smiths Tri Hone and nothing else.

He also stropped.

That makes a little more sense, I would still like to see a video of Reignman's technique and process. Not saying it's not true, just hard to believe - it takes a refined edge to shave coarse facial hair cleanly, and I wouldn't have believed that the Smiths fine stone was capable of it if you told me that yesterday.

Well, seeing as I've taken a Case knife to a refined edge with a coffee cup (seriously).. The Smith's seems like a step up to me! I am by NO means an expert at sharpening however, patience and common sense goes a LONG LONG way on a bench stone.

In all seriousness, I'm assuming your criticism is coming from the angle of the Smith's not being capable of such performance as oppose to my lack of ability to "find" an edge right?...

I'd gladly film a full length clip however, I'm sure that would take some time. About the only knife I have dull right now is my 0550 ZT.

Very interesting, thanks Motivated. Perhaps one day I can feel steady in the hand enough with my sharpening skills to try this method.
