Video game systems: PS3 vs Xbox?

Howdy folks-

I used to love the old first person shooters in high school (like Goldeneye on N64), but haven't played them in a long time. I always wanted to get into Halo but never had the time. Now that the largest portion of my schooling is over, and I might have something resembling 'free time' at some point, I'm thinking of picking out a real gaming system.

I've currently got a Wii, but it's not really what excels at the first-person shooter type stuff it seems. So right now I'm thinking about either the Xbox or the PS3. Right now I'm leaning toward the PS3 @ ~ $300.

Mostly, I just want something that won't screw up, and can smoothly play Halo type games and some zombie games, etc.

Thoughts, preferences, etc?

Thanks much-

Own both.

If I was just getting into consoles at this point, I'd only get a PS3.

99% of the best 360 content is also available (and better) on PC, making the 360 kind of redundant.

Also, you have to pay around $40 a year to play 360 games online vs free online for PC+PS3.

We have a PS3. One advantage over X-Box is that it plays Blu Ray discs, which look just incredible if you have a 1080p TV. We've had it for three years or so with no problems.

Some games are proprietary to the X-Box platform. Some are for PS3 only. There are probably more games available for X-Box than PS3, though. Halo is X-Box only. Probably the best shooters we have are the Call of Duty series and Resistance series.

Too bad about Halo being xbox only! I will not get a system for online game play if it means paying a yearly fee, so xbox is out. Just to make sure I have things straight: If I get one and have wireless internet (and the game), I can play it online through the wireless connection for free, yes?

I have a Xbox 360,Pc and Ps3. Ps3 I play blurays only. Pc I don't video game on it like I use to. I only play Xbox 360 live. The Ps3 network sucks..because it's free. All the games are the same on all 3. The popular ones. Except Halo and Gears of war. Only on Xbox 360. The 360 you can get the ring of death but they will replace it for you. In a well ventilated area it's not a problem with the newer once IME. Since IMO Halo,Gears or War and Cod are the best shooters I play Xbox. May not be the best console but it looks good still and imo has better games. Or I would simply play the other. My setup doesn't look like my pics but I like to game when there's nothing to do. Sound is an important part also. My pc is hooked up but you can't see it.I run a fan on my Xbox also. But to answer you question the Xbox will have 2 popular shooters is why I would pick that and the Superior on line game play vs Ps3 not PC. Or just save you $4 and play on your PC. If you watch alot of movies and don't plan on playing on line. Which is the most fun part of gaming= on line play. Get a Ps3 you can watch bluray on TV. JMO/JME

Do some research on the failure rates of the 360 and the choice will be clear.

PS3 without a question.

It's only not perfect because it doesn't have HALO. But OTOH, it won't transform itself into a brick as easily as the X360.
So if you add all that up, the PS3 is better IMO.

halo is a useless debate since modern warfare 1&2 are both better....gears is third person....PStripple no questions asked

Based on the failures that seem to be quite common, I think it'd have to be the PS3.

What's the word on getting one of those used? Stupid decision? Worthwhile for a non-serious gamer?

Gears isn't third person it's a shooter like Cod. Cod isn't better than Halo. You can have the Cod vs Halo all day long. I would rather play both. Online on Ps3 is crap. That alone I would rather play Pc or Xbox. If you don't play online IMO you've never truly experianced gaming.

The older ones 1&2nd generation with poor ventilation and cooling. The new ones are better. But they replace them. I've had failures and still prefer Xbox to Ps3. MY preferance. I have both as you see. I'm not a fanboy

Like I said before if your not a serious gamer. Ps3 would be fine. If you don't play online ect. But online play is far far Superior. = 10x as much fun. But you still can online game with Ps3 with friends ect. Just not as good. The Ps3 has Bluray which is nice.

I like the 360 more and also have a 360 currently. I am getting a ps3 as well. Do not buy a used system because you don't know the history of the unit and things are likely to go out on it sooner than a new one.

I basically don't play online with my PS3. I know it's more fun to play against humans, but I still have enough fun on my own, as long as it's a good game. Not getting into what game is better (that's strictly personal taste), the PS3 has two major advantages over the X360. First, it's less prone to problems then the X360 - the "3RL of death" is still common even with current units. And 2nd, the PS3 can play BRD.

Last year I was set to get a X360, but when I heard that the 3RL issues were still around, I went for the PS3. Sure MS will replace your unit, but you still have to go through all the hassle. So I got the PS3 and I'm really enjoying it. Most fun I ever had with a VG, even better then the PS2.

Yup if you aren't a diehard gamer the Ps3 has bluray and is a better machine. But once you play online nothing even compares. For the games I like #1. Xbox live. #2. PC
#3. Ps3 would be my choice. But for the OP since he's not a diehard gamer PS3 would be the best plug and play
