Video game systems: PS3 vs Xbox?

I just upgraded to a PS3 that I bought from a student's high school son for $60! LOL Once I configured the ethernet bridge he threw into the deal, I was connected to my wireless network at home at a fraction of the cost of a PS3 new. Happy is right! lol

I like it because I can connect to Netflix wirelessly, too, and watch online content, which is pretty cool (although their online stuff is a little limited). I don't have high def TV, so the blue-ray/high def is lost on me, but I think the PS3 is a good system.

Honestly the PS3 is the better buy, I finally bought the PSP 3000 series and have been playing SOCOM Fire Team Bravo 2, great game, already ordered FTB3. Great game.

I have a 360 and subscribe to XBox Live. The network is great, but my 360 developed the "red ring of death". Microsoft fixed it, but it was still a hassle. If you want to play online, buy a 360. Otherwise, a PS3 might be better if you like the game library.

If you can, upgrade to a high def plasma or LCD screen. You won't believe the difference, it's from water to wine.

And that's the BIG problem with the X360. If MS fixed this then things would be very different. Heck, I probably would have a X360 instead of the PS3! I can live without the BRD player, and generally speaking, I think that the X360 is a better gaming platform. But as long as the 3RL problem is occurring so often (my cousin is in his third device :grumpy:), the X360 is out of the game.

The PS3 is a good system, and IMHO they both now have a pretty decent game library and both are pretty even on the side of exclusives. However, if you want to play Halo or Mass Effect 2... you'll need an Xbox. Right now the only PS3 shooter that's exclusive that's really hot is MAG. Both have Modern Warfare 2... so the point is moot anyway, just get that first.

If you intend to play online, get the Xbox. Their online service Xbox Live is top notch and offers an incredible experience. You do have to pay, but $50 a year is worth it for the superior online experience. If you have a Netflix account you can watch movies online (same for the PS3 but you have to swap discs) which is an awesome feature.

As far as the RROD on the Xbox, I have logged two or three hundred hours on my Xbox 360 Elite purchased in 2009 with no problems to report.

IMO i was disappointed in the PS3. I already had a PS2 with like 80 games, i couldnt justify the extra money for a blue-ray player with just a little bit better graphics...

SP,

I've had both the ps2 & xbox, when the ps3 and 360 started making their ways onto the market. I racked my brains on this debate too. I waited & waited, perused info, took my time. When I finally made my decision it was about this time last year. I picked the PS3, I picked up a used one through a personal for sale ad through a website that has lists all kinds of everything up for sale & you can find things locally. I have been extremely happy with the PS3 system and its performance. I too play 1st persons and you have a good selection of games to choose from. Each system is going to have it's pro's and cons, and from what I read everyone here have decent points back and forth. Since I bought my PS3, I have not touched my ps2 or regular xbox (and I used to play the box alot more than the ps back then), yup, I still have those 2 older systems, can't justify trading them into some store for the low amount of $ they want to give.

that's just my 2¢

I have an Xbox. I mainly chose it because I live in Japan and wanted to get Region free games in English. I've had mine for 2 years and play on it pretty often and have had no problems so far. My friend has a PS3 and I really like that system, too. I think it really boils down to what games you want to play, are you going to be playing online a lot and how much do you want to spend?
I would recommend NOT buying used (Unless it's ridiculously cheap), unless you buy from a games centre that offers a warranty.

I've heard nothing but good things about the PS3. I would recommend staying away from the Xbox 360 though. They are cheap and have cool games but they are made like spit. I recently got the red ring of death two months ago after a little over a year of owning it. Before that I had problems with the visuals. So in all from Christmas '07 to Summer of May of '09 my xbox worked okay. It still acted up, freezing in the middle of games, over heating.

Now I focus on building up my old skool games. Much simpler in '98...

For a real gaming system, you'll need a PC, the video cards on the xbox and ps3 are out dated, it's equivalent to a nvidia 7800gtx, you can easily build a powerful pc gaming system that will greatly out perform a ps3 or xbox for $700 and overclock the GPU and CPU to get even better performance.

If you think that consoles are better because you don't have to upgrade as the graphics in the games never improve but PC games keep getting better and better, you can always play older games on high resolution + details and newer games on medium/low details + resolution with a similar fps.

Also pc games are generally cheaper than console games, mw2 would be an exception .

I'm 40 y/o and have a 12 y/o daughter. She has a Wii and DSi and I have a PS3 and PSP. Of course we share! But the PS3 is tops for shooting games and more adult level games, where as the Wii is more kid based. They are coming out with more and more games on Wii that are geared for adults, but with Blue Ray, free online, etc., I think PS3 is awesome! Plus God of War 3 and Heavy Rain are coming out soon and Modern Warefare 2 already came out; all awesome games!

Sure, but as piracy becomes more rampant, developers become less and less willing to invest in making PC games, and big exclusives get to consoles. At least you PC gamers will get some ports... :D

On the other hand, Steam is really the holy grail for PC gaming... headache-free digital distribution and heavily consumer-oriented.

:thumbup:Another vote for the PS3,I got mine a couple months ago & I'm still amazed at what it can do.

Just a few things to consider:

XBOX 360 hardware has an extremely high failure rate.

Most multi-platform games released tend to look better on 360 despite the PS3's superior hardware specs.

PS3's hardware is more difficult to develop for, but has much greater potential than the 360. My opinion; PS3 has the potential to outlast the 360 (in terms of lifespan - game development) than 360.

People say the PS3 graphics are better than the Xbox 360. Not so. Most games are for both systems and they don't develop a different game for the PS3 than they do for the 360...they port the same game. It will look the same. As for the exclusive PS3 games....they're marginally better if at all in terms of graphics. There are a couple games for PS3 that are must have's that aren't on 360 and vice versa but the 360 titles weigh more on me, especially ones like Halo and Gears.

The PS3 is infinitely more reliable while the 360 has crapped out on me three times. Twice it was fixed within a week and a half for free...last time it was out of warranty so I bought a new one with which the problems are reportedly less. Has been six months and it's still working :p.

I like watching Blu-Rays on my PS3 but it isn't and wasn't a big deal upon buying it. You can get a BR player fairly cheap now.

I like the controls on the X-box more even though I VERY much like the PS3.

The biggest difference in the two for me is that the PS3 online is absolute GARBAGE compared to X-box live. They're in two different leagues. You get what you pay for. People whine about $40? That's like $4 a MONTH!

I have owned both. My 360 spent more time going in for repairs than in actual use. I will never buy another microsoft product again. Stick with the ps3.

PC will always have games, there are 3 things that do not work/will not work well on consoles, First person shooters(well they do but they suck), strategy games(eg Dawn of war 40k), and MMORPG.

Knock on wood, but my son has had an XBox 360 for over two years, heavy (i mean continous :grumpy:) usage and no problems.
