What I hope to get better at, is being more funny , and to say things that make people smile as they watch the video.
The real reason I made this bunch of clips is to help my future-self remember how to do this.
My free time to make any knife is just about up for this winter.
Soon the hours I spend at work will take me away from my forge.
But when I return to making a knife I always have a hard time with the first few knife sheaths just getting down what step is next?
During the video tapeing here this time I found myself always thinking,,"Whats the next step again Alan?"
Also, being "natural" in front of my wife holding a camera is not that easy for me yet.
I dont "talk" or say my words clearly. When I watch these clips I hear myself, mumble, slure my words, lose my point, or just not say anything at all..
But many knife videos I have watched on YouTube also have a problem with the guy not talking.
The reason?
Perhaps it is because most of the time when we make a knife or a handle or a knife sheath, we are totally alone? Alone and not really talking out loud to anyone.
Another thing to think about, is that when I do any stage in my forge work, that most of the things Im doing are because of a long history of doing things a different way, that turned out not to work.
Even little things like the place I stand while I hit the hot steel, or the way I hold the sheath while I stitch , are all based on trial-and-error. (mostly error)
It's hard to talk about all that stuff while you do it.
I think the answer is to have a script before hand. Some type of outline that I can look up, and talk about so that i know what Im about to do, and what I wanted to talk about.
AND....
In the future, when Im all set up and making a recordings that will be turned into a real DVD that I will send with a knife when it's sold, that I hope to be more "fun" to watch and listen to.
I think any knife making DVD that lacks "Fun" is a pointless thing for me to make.
Thats the thing where most of the YOUTUBE videos clips made by guys at the forge always FAIL...
They are so dull.....
most guys will say a few things, then hit some steel, then......well..keep hitting the steel and not say anything more for the rest of the clip.
The market is WIDE OPEN for a video showing some "fun" to it.
A video showing not everything going right the first time.
A video where the knife snaps during the 90 % flext test rather then bending as expected.
A video that shows a hammer breaking during the forge work.
Or many of the other common problems that come up as a knife is made.,,,,things that make the experience more real to the viewer.
