Video of SERE/RAT/ESEE firekits

Man, reading this thread made me realize I just have the plain old ferro rod too... I'm in the same boat. I wanted to try out that crazy awesome misch metal! :grumpy: I guess I'll just have to buy one and epoxy it in

The ferro rods are a harder metal. You can get the same molten glob effect with a sharper blade, and harder pressure and a diffrent angle. You want to cut slightly into the rod, but slightly. If you go too hard or deep, you'll chatter on the rod and it will make a series of bumps. If this happens you'll have to carefully and lightly scrap it smooth again.

Remember, it's a lifesaving tool. It's only job is to make a flame. Keep it packed with cotton balls soaked in vasoline or if you've got time, magnesium shavings. I guarantee the ferro rod will start these in one good pull.

That's the other tip, don't push the knife down the rod, hold it firm and press down. Then yank the rod. Better control of spark into tinder, letting you hold closer and not knock material around

Hey you guys.. All these Esee posts and threads are costing me alot of $$$s. But that so very cool, (or in this thread HOT) Now I have to get one of those. Well gone shopin again. Thanks.. edgy.
It looks like the new one will do the job. Get at Firesteel? Or Esee dealer? Thanks in advance for advice. Enjoy

I get mine from knivesshipfree.com firesteel has thier own brand of starter. It's good, and I like them. I've got one in my maxxie go bag as my fourth fire backup. (after my 2 lighters, box of storm 15 second burn matches, 2 rat firekits, mini misch rod, and bare misch rod....and just before my firepiston)

The major benefit to the rat kit, it's got a better handle for grip, and has a great storage area. there's also no moving parts, whereas most other kits have you flipping or screwing something to get at the rod itself.

Someone said "beat me at my game?" (and just to fill out the thread some, it's too light on photos)

Hey Dizwolf. Thanks. You just made my shopping day alot shorter. Very very good pics by the way. Thanks again. Enjoy. edgy

No wonder theres no misch metal fire kits left for us. Dizwolf bought them all. :D

Dude I stash these things everywhere. I keep one in the pouch on my 5 and 6, my RAT pack, my Jumbo, one in my pack, and one in my day bag. I'm working on a better way to carry one on my junglas. I want to avoid a pouch style thing on that, but may slip a Janus on it anyways. Be a good way to get a firekit, a flashlight, an SAK and some other toys onto it without having to go into microgear.

I didn't know there was a version with SERE on it...when did the RAT firekits first come into existence?

I've got the one that came after that one...no survival tips and no compass. And I've got what looks like the last design before they switched to standard ferro and epoxy.

I have to say, the compass in my firekit is the best I've seen for that size. No bubble and finds north almost instantly with no need to wobble the damn thing in your palm like most..anyone know who makes those compasses included in the firekits?

I'm sure misch metal is good, but I've never used anything but ferro rods (and sometimes a little magnesium shavings), and never had a problem.

The only reason to have the ESEE fire kit is the cool-a** aluminum holder, with space for tinder. I wouldn't worry about misch or ferro. Just get the ESEE and be happy. It's good kit either way.
