Video "Quench, Heat Treat, Rockwell Hardness"

He is all over the place with his procedures and equipment. He has no temperature control, different sized quenching containers and he agitates for some but not others. I didn't even feel the need to watch it to the end. I am happy about the hardness tester, at least.:)

Okay, I watched the end... he didn't even grind off the surface decarb from the test coupons... tsk, tsk, tsk.

That olive oil quench had me scared as fudge. Touch the side of the container and it melts instantly - then what? Hot oil everywhere.

Moved to VIDEO sticky.

I am re-opening the thread for discussion. If the consensus is that this is not good info, I can delete the entire thread and video.

I agree with Rick that the test could have been much better with controlled temperature and equal sized quench tanks. I would love to see a test like this done again but with more scientific paramaters. I was a bit surprised that the motor oil quenched so low, not that I expected it to be good anyways.

I'd like to see this done again with other common quenchants such as Mineral Oil, ATF, Super Quench, and Parks 50. Although I also understand that the hardness doesn't tell the whole story.

Jason's comments are why I am not really in favor of threads about a non-member's video in Shop Talk.

You can't talk to the person doing the project.
You can't ask for additional info.
You can't discuss any changes in procedure with them.
etc.

Basically, you are talking to the air.

I agree, Stacy. I wasn't happy when you closed the thread but now I understand the reasoning behind it in this particular case. I would also add that the link should be removed in the future.

BUT there is a caveat...

No posting of non-member videos sounds like a fair rule... but may put an axe to some of the best, most educational videos I've seen.

I would stick to just shutting down (and breaking the links) on non-member video threads with a prominently negative response from posters. I think that in the future, any threads with outside links should be accompanied by an overall opinion and review by the OP. The emphasis should be put on what the member pulled from the linked media, the media itself should only be used for reference. BF's Political Arena is ran that way and it has successfully all but eliminated the "drop a link a run" threads.

Very good points... I also feel like I talk to the air every time my wife is around.

But it would be neat to see the video redone with the suggestions. I would do it if I had a proper tester, but Santa wasn't THAT nice to me this year.

Blade forums has thousands of members and people do not always use the same name here as they do on Youtube or other sites, so it might not be possible to know who is a member of BF and who is not just by watching a video.

I find the responses of members here very informing. It is like people reviewing a movie or book. While the author is not present the opinions of those who saw the work can stimulate some education.

Rick,
That is why I created a sticky just for posting these videos.

It just isn't productive to have a thread with a long discussion and debate over a video that the maker of can't respond to. Such things should be in the General Discussion or other forums. Shop talk is for shop talk ...between the members of Bladeforums. If the video maker wants to discuss his video, all he needs to do is register.

Adam, That is what places like Around The Grinder and such are for.

I am going to close this thread and delete the video. You can always re-post the discussion about it in a general discussion forum, or Around the Grinder.
