You can use either, but depending on the steel you may not want the more acute angle. Also, if the existing edge is pretty obtuse ( the few benchmades i've had were rediculous) you may want to invest in the diamond stones as well for reprofiling purposes if the sharpmaker is to be your primary sharpening system. If you just want to find which angle is closer to the existing angle, you can paint the edge with a black sharpie and do a few strokes noting where the sharpie is wearing off.
