VIDEO: Sharpening the Endura 4 ZDP-189 On the Edge Pro

Thanks Jim. I've been wondering about your technique with the edge pro. I saw a couple of things I can improve on. This video no doubt will help me get even sharper knives.

I generally use water very liberally, so much that the slurry runs off. I can also see that your "edges" are much closer to the edge of the Stand itself

I'm going to modify how I sharpen a little more and see what works best. Thank you!

Not bad  but 17 minutes for a touch up ;):p:D

It's alittle different than what most people do I guess.

The edge was pretty torn up from the rope cutting and cardboard that I did and some other stuff so I had to remove all of that. Usually I would start at 1000 grit then back to the tapes.

That was a very fruitful video and showed me that it's well overdue for me to flatten my stones, as I don't get anywhere NEAR that much slurry on my 600 and 1000 grit stones, which might explain why it takes me half an hour to do the same thing:eek:.

Very nice, thanks. My Apex Edge Pro is arriving next week, and I bought it watching the edges on your knives. So consider yourself responsible :D

How do you sharpen Benchmade 710? Do you have to remove the thumbstuds to sharpen the blade?

Thats a good question. I have come across some knives with thumb studs and irregularly shaped blades that made it almost impossible to use the Edge Pro Apex effectively. For those I usually resort to another sharpener (Wicked Edge, Lansky, Sharpmaker etc.)

I have, but there is really no need. :)

Ok. The reason I ask is because on both my S90V para2 and the M4 gayle Bradley that were sharpened at 30 inclusive, after some use both had little micro-chips in the blade that were visible at 60x magnification.

The s90 actually had the little chips there right after I took it off the edge pro. What do you think caused that? Are these steels too brittle to hold and edge that acute?

That's weird...

Nice shot downwards!

Jim, have you had to replace stones yet?
I find a bit of wear on the 120, but I'm doing a lot of initial bevels right now
but the others don't seem to show much wear.

I have gone through:

3 x 120
1 x 220
2 x 320
1 x 600

But I have sharpened a lot of knives.

Not too bad at all, I have an extra 120, thought that'd be a smart one to have on hand
and just ordered the 1/2" wide set and also an extra 220 and 320 for my spares :)

It's becoming a habit ;)

Not bad really, I found that keeping them in water all the time really helps keeping them from wearing out too fast.

Had some dude try and tell me he can get his blades just as sharp on a Sharpmaker with UF rods as I can with the EP.... ROFL

I have always prided myself on my ability to sharpen a knife free hand,
just seemed to come natural, but pride comes before a fall is a real truism ;)
On getting and LEARNING the EdgePro, I concede my blades, while sharp
they were not truly as sharp as they could be over all. They are now MUCH sharper!!

You can get a knife quite keen with the sharpmaker but with Ultra Fine rods
it will need to be in pretty good shape to begin with.

I'll still use a small pocket hone, a Fallkniven DC4, has diamond back and ceramic front
very handy size, also my Spyderco Profiles too on trips when I don't have the EP with me.
