What I used was a 3" x 4" Landscape Timber to compare the 4 knives. Kept the videos short so you can really see the difference between these 4 blades. I took breaks between the videos to rest my arm.

The NMFBM was the winner with 25 seconds chopping. :D

The FFBM was 2nd @ 46 seconds.

Sweet vids, that NMFBM is awesome.

Thanks for taking the time to post them.:thumbup:

I've found that, for me at least, the Trailmaster's handle design allows it to rotate in my hand during chopping, especially when I start getting a bit tired, resulting it some glancing hits. I noticed that some of the same seemed to be happening here. Replacing the handle on the TMs and Recon Scouts greatly improves them for me. The straight handle is great for a fighter and changing grips quickly, but doesn't anchor in your hand like one with more contour.

As far as the weight goes, with its narrower tang, the Trailmaster's balance is actually about as far forward as these heavier knives, but it's a narrower blade, and so climbs to it's full thickness at the spine at a noticeably sharper angle than the others. This is an advantage when splitting, a disadvantage when cutting.

The TM is really a good field knife for those who want a light weight knife, but it's not a big chopper, it can do it, but it takes longer than the bigger heavier blades.

wow, great stuff!

Try making longer notches, i think that helps you chop through quicker. As a general rule, the notch should be wider than the thickness of the material being chopped. Those Chopping comp guys use some damn large notches, and get though material like a damn buzz-saw!

The Busse's are awesome choppers, but that is largely because they are extremely heavy.

If you are hiking out, chances they will be left at home.

The TM is a great knife because it offers a lot of cutting (and yes, chopping) power in a much lighter package.

However, if chopping is really your main intention, I still feel a hatchet is the best option. For compactness, ease of carry and chopping ability.

I think the NMFBM will outchop a hatchet. :D

Yeah the TM is a great field blade really, it's very light and strong for it's size.

Hi, awesome vids man.
Have you had any experience batoning with the bwm?
I'm torn between a BWM(because it's gonna cost me way less) And a CG FBM(because it's fatter and would possibly work better for me.
I'm primarily going to be using it for batoning, I doubt I'll be doing much chopping at all.
What's your opinion? BWM or FBM? for the difference of $200 or more.
I'd really appreciate your input.
Thanks a bunch,
Gabriel.

The BWM works well for battoning because of the Convex grind. :)

SOLD, I'll order one tonight :) thanks for sharing the pics. I was more curious about the difference in performance due to the thickness but I'm sure I'll be happy with it.
Peace

Sweet, the pattern's a nice variation. I ordered one last night muddy/tan :]
Peace.

Ankeron, have you ever thrown an axe or hatchet into the mix? Like a Gransfors Brux or the like? Just curious.
