I picked this up directly from Jim along with his dvd on how he forges these amazing monsters....

Here is his descriptions from our emails...

I still have the large Type M axe head and have attached higher resolution pics of it. Typologically speaking it is the last of Jan Petersen's categories for axes and originates at the end of the Viking age. One of the better known versions of it is in the British Museum and came out of the Thames from a battle fought there. Type M axes are at the large end of the size range for Viking axes. With their reinforced edges it seems that they were expected to deliver heavy blows against better-developed armor - part of that era's arms race. Should you decided to purchase it I will forge another one this year because these axes have a definite "presence" that is nice to have around.

Yours, Jim.

I have included several pictures of my premiere Type M axe for your perusal. To keep the attachments manageable I will send pictures of of other axes in a follow-up email to keep them separate.

As to this Type M axe: I am asking $800 for this axe. It is a significant piece to me as it is the first one which worked on anything like this scale. It was forged from mild steel and 1075 very close to its final form and required minimal grinding to finish. The cutting edge is 11.1" long and yet the piece is light overall - 790 grams - because it is thinned out behind the relatively heavy edge. The weld-line from the mild steel body to the 1075 edge is both beautiful and faultless - difficult to achieve on such a large piece. I will answer any questions you have about it and can send higher-resolution photos if you want.

I paid his asking of $800 but have gotten some great value out of "studying" it and viewing the dvd for my own forging...

I also made a crappy quicky but effective kydex protective sheath for it... already cut myself with it once... it will come shipped in that...

I've seen requests for re-enactors looking for these so hopefully someone will get good use out of this... great for the "Zombie Hoard" as a back-up

So let's call it $650 shipped / insured in the US... if you buy it this weekend... I'll throw in the DVD and you can watch and learn how he does it as well...

Thanks for looking

K
