Well guys, here is the latest and greatest for the viking dagger. I do believe that this is a "Type D" that came into use from 600 to 700 A.D. It is definitely different from my first revision.

This one has mokume gaurd, ferrules, and pommel. All of the wood is Beng Burl. All mokume is staight laminate exept for the ferrules which are a very elongated twist.

So do do you all think about this one, are the proportions better? What do you think about the historical style?

As always, thanks for your help and honest opions.

I thought the original was stunning, but your last example is absolutely beautiful, Fella! I would go with your latest choice, no disrespect to your other choices. With the mokume and new wood, it's an absolute winner. About being perfectly correct according to history, I would say to -ell with worrying about what is correct, with a knife that beautiful.

HHmmm......not bad but I would like to see just one more handle. :D

The new one is stunning Sean! wrap it up youre done!

I'll third that! You got it man, that just rocks. I like the wood in the guard and that mokume is something else.

Wow...double WOW...the way the burl matches the mokume is just stunning. The first incarnation, I thought was beautiful, but using the material that you have now, really brings out the beauty in the entire package. Excellent work!

Sean you nailed it this time! You couldn't ask for a more nicely proportioned package than that. Wow!

     Five smokes.

I'm almost tempted to criticise the new handle just to see what you come up with next.

Now that newest permutation works REAL GOOD, Sean! Beautiful. You done the blade high justice!

Hey thanks guys, it took this one a bit to grow on me, but once i got the mokume patina and wood finished, she really came alive. I like it better too. I was going to add some more extras to the gaurd and pommel, but I ran out of material so I had to delete them. Still turned out good though.

I will try to get some better pics today while it is light out and repost them. But thanks again for your replies and I can't forget to give some credit to "Little Dude" for making me go back and check out some history.

Now I just need to design a blade around the old gaurd and pommel. Any Ideas? ;) :D

OOOoooooo, Dude, I love that new hilt.
Even though the guard is still thick, the larger pommel compliments it- it works together now. And I realize you were not trying to exactly duplicate the historical designs, but this new one looks closer to "correct" from my point of view.

FYI - I updated the pics in my original post with some new ones.

Possum - Too Thick? You are crazy. :D Any thinner and I might as well use tin foil. ;)

Just make a bigger and wider blade to go with the rest of the hardware. Whip one up out of 1084 and do the edge at critical only quench.

Sean, you have arrived at the top of the mountain. The knife is pefection, and I can't see where you could go further with it, even by adding jewels. No, don't do it! It looks great right where it is! I really don't know how you do it, how you keep churning out such great materials and knives like it's nothing.

No, I don't think it's too thick at all. Should have worded that differently.
I just mean it happens to be thicker than the guards many guys put on Bowies and such these days. In this case, it works wonderfully.
