Viking Dagger - Round Two - Another Hilt

Man that is perfect. I don’t see why anyone would want to change a thing.

Man you do some beatiful work. how long did it take to make that blade? do you have any pics of the furrels before they went on? are they just hollow pieces of pipe like?

Thanks guys, it has definitely been a labor of love (some times hate). I was going to make some mokume rivets and bevel the gaurds, but my material ran a bit short, so i was lucky to get what I did without having to make more.

The ferrules were made from a scrap piece of twisted mokume about 0.75 diameter and 0.75 in length. That scrap piece was cut off of a "pen blank" that I made. I hammered it out to about 0.033 with the 25# L.G. and then silver soldered them together once they were formed around the grip.

I can't remember how long it took me to make the blade steel. I actually had that done about a year ago and it has been on the shelf since then. I would guess around 20 hours to get it all welded and roughed in. I think I spent more time making the first set of furniture than I did on the blade. I am afraid to try to figure out how many hours the whole project has taken.

Before I got turned onto the mokume with wood sandwich gaurds, I was still going to use sterling silver for the ferrules instead of mokume. So I spent two days learning how to tie various continuous celtic style knots with metal wire with the intent of using that for ferrule material.

I would have to say I am into the triple digits (hours wise) on this one. Kind of scary when you think of it, or maybe I am just slow. :D  :D

I like it both ways. That's one he!! of a job!

I have a devil of a time carving the darn things. Sometime when you really want to wow everybody, how about posting a tutorial on weaving them out of wire.

I looked at my post and realized it sounded kind of casual. SOOOOO....let me change my observation. That is among the top three, most beautiful daggers, I've ever seen!

thanks again guys, I might reshape the grip on this one to make a bit more oval and I am debating on tenoning the ferrules to make them flush with the grip. She is not hard assembled yet so I still get to tweek her in.

Peter, go to this website:

Turk's Head Knots

He has a tutorial which is ok, and a lot of info on his website, but you kind of have to dig around for it. Also try doing a serch on "turks head knot" on altavista or google and there is more info out there. I can do it, but not nearly good enough to write a tutorial.

Thanks again everybody for your compliments and feedback. I appreciate it. Now somebody just buy this darn thing would ya? :D  :D
