This is a little puukko-esque knife I made for fun. I did a bit of carving on it because I hadn't done any in a long time. Don't try to decipher the runes, they don't say anything :). It is shaving sharp with a nice acute edge. Designed to work, this knife has a short and to the point (haha :)) blade and a large comfortable handle. 7 1/2 inch AOL, 3 inch blade.

Materials:

1084 and wrought iron san mai

Really nice piece of figured maple

elk antler

birch bark spacers

brass peen block

Price: $150 shipped CONUS

I am also considering making a "Gotlandic" sheath from veggie tanned leather and brass, but can only do so if I have a buyer...

Thanks guys, I wasn't aware my membership had reverted back to Basic Member. It should be fixed now. Thanks for the compliments as well.

The runes are Elder Futhark runes, and I have an Old Norse to English dictionary. I engraved the bolsters on another knife called "vinrtharfr" with ancient words , but on this one, I couldn't think of anything appropriate, so I just put scrambled runes to simulate the seemingly meaningless jumble of letters sometimes found on artifacts. One theory is that what such artifacts contained were acronyms, another is that, since runes were seen as having intrinsic power in Norse culture, the mere presence of the letters on the tool would impart special properties :p

True. If you read the runes as kennings rather than sounds, a deliberate random jumble is like casting the bones to get a subconscious storyline.

Man I cant believe this hasnt sold yet, especially with that Vikings mini-series on History Channel right now. That knife is totally sick dude! Awesome work! I love Scandinavian style knives they are some of the most useful patterns ever made and man I wish I had money for this. I know its a bit early but if you make another one like this closer to christmas time Ill definitely be interested as I am carving my little bro a staff covered in runes and nordic designs as a gift and one of these would go great with it! Keep it up man you make some of the most interesting stuff I see on here and I always have my eye out for your posts!
