ATTENTION all western and central New York Knife buyers: I came across this old fella in Scottsville, and was really impressed with his store and his attitude toward the knife industry in general (He liked the fact that I was carrying a Lone Wolf, as well).

My first imression when I entered the store was not neccesarily a good one -- it was small and cramped, and the case front and center looked like things that had been falling off the low end of his collection for 20 years or so. Then out saunters this old man who I guessed at 85 or so(turns out he's 103!). I struck up a conversation with him, and every time he would turn to go get something, I had another chance to look around at his wares(he doesn't move too quick). AWESOME! Marbles, Scagel, Queen, Schatt & Morgan, Lone Wolf, Kershaw and CRKT just to name a few.

He talked me up for over an hour with stories of swimming in the lake my town sits on, having the first liscensed deer kill with a bow in New York State(a wooden bow with wooden arrows), and knife celebrities he's met over the years. He is also a fount of information about everything knife related. Did you know Henckles are only ASSEMBLED in Germany(Chinese blade, US handle, German rivets and weld)? I sure didn't.

He is blowing out his Marbles slip joints(the US ones, not the chinese ones) for $75 bucks a piece because, in his words, no one understand value anymore.

I left with this Kershaw Leek from Santa Fe Stoneworks:

Well, not that one exactly, but one like it.

Here is the way he describes his schedule, verbatim(from a typed handout on his counter):

"Open most days 12 noon, occasionally 10 AM, but some days 2 or 3. Never on Wednesdays. We close about 4 or 5, but sometimes as late as 6 or 7. Some days we aren't here at all, and lately I've been here just about all the time, Except when I'm someplace else. Please call 889 XXXX first."

Just a heads up, Hard Times Carter(as he calls himself) is getting on in years, and may not be doing this much longer, so if you can, get out there and see him, he has lots of good stuff. and even more that isn't shown. Just ask him, he'll be glad to talk your ear off.
