Hey guys, I kinda stumbled upon something last night that I was wandering if anyone else has had happened to them. I had just finished a blade a couple of days ago and put it into a jar of vinegar to etch. I checked on it last night and found that it had turned pink. At first I didn't know what was going on. I finally realized what had happened or what I think had happened. I have several jars of Muratic Acid, Ferric Chloride and Vinegar sitting on a shelf. A few nights before I had cleaned up some copper caps I had made in the vinegar solution. I etched my knife in that same jar. I tried to clean it off with acetone and even paint thinner. I ended up taking some mild abrasive paste and a 2000 grit paper that I had rubbed together to break down the harshness of it, to clean it up. I ended up with a nice looking blade that showed a faint temper line and a pinkish transluscent hue. Instead of really going to town on the blade and starting over I put a stained red handle on it that i carved hearts into and gave it to my wife. Pretty corny I know but she loved it.:D
Has anyone ever experienced this before? I usually use a seperate jar for my fittings and had never had this happen. I am going to experiment with this with other metals and see what happens. The look is pretty cool and I don't think it has damaged the knife. What do you think? I will try to post a picture of it to show you the results.

Pictures??? You basically plated your blade with copper. When you cleaned the copper in the vinegar it left a little copper in the solution. Very common when the solution is not clean.

I knew that the copper had plated to the knife. I just thought it had a cool look to it and I know that my wife would never use it. It will be in the same place that she keeps everything else she never throws out. LOL!!!
I'm not to worried about it turning green. I removed most of the copper to where it is just a transluscent hue. After I finished the knife I coated the blade with a very light clear coat and put it into one of the glass cases I had previously made. It should keep and if not, I'll just remove the rest of the copper film and put it back. Very sneaky! Don't tell my wife!
