This axe belonged to my Grandfather. I found it in his work shop several months ago and decided to restore it. It was covered in rust, but in good condition.
The condition i found it in
Removing the handle and rust
New handle. 36" octagonal that I brought down to 34"
There was a significant difference in eye size. After lots of rasping it finally fit
Shortened/reshaped the handle to 34" and put a continuous taper from the shoulder to the swell.
Cutting/sizing the kerf and wedge
Soaking the handle in linseed oil. (credit goes to cooperhill for the pvc pipe idea)
Burned my Grandfather's name in the side of the handle
The bevels were already in like-new condition and relatively very sharp. I cleaned up the edges with some sanding and stone-sharpening.
(sharp enough)
Made a leather sheath for it
Here she is with the rest of the family
