It seems to command a premium and is sought after. Why is it so valued? Why does no one make it now, if it is so valued? Is it a case of "its rare, so it's therefore valuable?

Supply and demand partly I suspect. The stuff's hard to find.....so it commands a higher price. Other than that I don't know. Never handled any myself.
 
I assume you're talking about Westinghouse micarta?

Aside from rarity, it allegedly ages a bit differently than the new stuff, and takes on some nice colors that aren't easily duplicated.
 
I see if for sale sometimes in the knife makers for supplies area here. I just wondered what all the hubbub is about.
