I picked up this blade a couple of weeks ago for $12. It appears to be carbon steel and takes a great edge. I'm guessing that it is handmade. The handle is huge, both in length and in thickness (someone had a big mitt...). The specs are like this:

15.5" OA
8.5" blade (1/8" thick)
7" walnut handle with ring (kinda like a spivey)
1.5" handle thickness

The ring seems like a novelty, but it helps choke up on the blade. I like this guy, but I am a sucker for 1/8" carbon blades. Is anyone familiar with this as a traditional pattern?

Looks just like the one that Jefferson Spivey made for his horseback trip across the country, but I can`t remember the name of it. I know it`s still being made.
It might have been called Sabertooth?

wow, great knife and glad to see you back.

Yes, we were wondering just a bit ago what happened to you and somebody suggested that you weren't here lately because you are ......whipped. The problem is they used my name to do it ...............

Glad to see you back. :D

Doc

The handle on that thing is huge, but the wood has a lot of character to it. Very nice score. Not entirely in love with the ring, but at $12, I would have scooped it up too.

Good seeing you back here Mneedham!

Either you have a tiny hand or that handle is gigantic:eek:

Either way that's a cool find for 12 bucks:thumbup:

Any thought of grinding that hump off so the spine is flat with the handle?

Oh yeah, good to have ya back:thumbup:

Guys,

Thank you and its good to be back! Tried to spend the 5 minutes that I wasn't working this summer being outdoors... It would be a serious understatement to say that business has been crazy, but I'm grateful for that...

Stomper,
That is a heck of a chunk of steel you have there! Do you find value in the ring?

That picture that Stomper posted is a stock photo of Jefferson Spivey holding an unground Sabertooth blank. The Sabertooth knife was a pretty original design..most either love it or hate it..I think its an OK knife..I have owned a couple..the history behind your knife is cool...it could be a hand made copy of the sabertooth that was pictured on the cover of "guns" magazine in the late 60's..it was the first time the public ever saw a sabertooth, and it was interesting to alot of folks. Jefferson still has a fan base that is loyal to his knives...I know of a couple of collectors that buy quite a few of his older sabertooths. The funny thing is, he (Jefferson) isnt at all interested in knives or knife making...he just makes the sabertooth..and has from 1966 on. Strange really.

TonyM,

I actually don't think I will remove the ring. I like the way it it allows you to choke up on the big grips... You can actually hold the handle with two hands.

Quill - Yep, its a Sharpfinger made for Andre the the Giant.

Gene - I believe the Spivey is in production. I read an article in Tactical Knives a while back, the blade steel choice was something unusual, I believe....

Stomper - Sorry, I thought it was a shop photo....

Yes, Jefferson is still making the Sabertooth..I owned one of his from 1968 and one from 2005. The knives are made of chrome-molly. I dont know enough about steel to comment other than my new one performed pretty good and took a razor edge. I wonder who made this one, and if it was a copy of the original Sabertooth. It was first brought to light on the cover of "GUNS" magazine in the late 60's. Gene

Gene,

I don't know anything the history of this knife (I was kinda of hoping someone here would...), but I do like it. I tend to handle a knife a lot when I first get it, the longer it gets fondled, the greater the chance of it being kept in the rotation and I've handled this one a lot. It is very light for a big knife and has interesting feel in the hand...

I heard that Bill Moran gave Jefferson input on the steel selection for the Sabretooth. If true, its no surprise that it performs well...

I heard it was Bo Randall...?! I like the SAbertooth, but the cost was WAY to much IMO. I think the knife should be around $125 tops.

I would defer to you on the Bo Randall V. Bill Moran thing, my info comes from knife show lore:D!

Mneedham! It's about time you show up here! Great to see you again....and cool knife.
