Visible knife clip grounds for pat down search?

this is based on what exactly?

first hand experience? some story you heard?

First hand experience. I was at a fair with my CRKT M21 clipped to my pocket. I was approached and asked for it. A little banter lead to my handing it to the leo, who promptly placed it in his pocket. He said I seemed to be acting shifty, and asked why I had a knife on me in the first place. I asked him why he carried a gun. (Probably not the smartest thing to do.... ) A little more explanation and talk lead to him asking for my address. I got the knife back in about a week.

Alright before anybody get's bent out of shape, let me cool this off, if I may.

Josh K: You could have been a little nicer in how you worded your initial post. And refusing to give the man with the badge and the gun a bladed instrument you are carrying, or getting snide with him, is not a very sound idea. However, that officer's conduct is not very common in the US and is discouraged my many departments.

Morimotom: I understand if you want to get a little defensive when you hear people badmouth officers. But also know that this kind of behavior, even if rare, does go on. The officer above would have made himself quite vulnerable to a lawsuit under 42 USC § 1983.

Not trying to bend anyone out of shape. I was the one bent out of shape at the time, and admittedly could have handled it better. Most leo's a great people. I know a couple.

relax, and stop coming to nobody's rescue.

anytime anyone posts an unsubstantiated general statement, i will question it.

it was an anecdote, then he posted his actual experience. good enough.

I have been to many fairs in my area (Topsfield Fair, Marshfield Fair, Deerfield (NH) Fair, along with many walks through Boston and other cities here in Massachusetts with anti-knife ordinances. Never had a problem. I am sure that a huge factor in my LEO-hassle-free travels is the fact that I "lost" the clip on my Cold Steel "Voyager" folder as soon as I removed it from the box. My folder gets carried pivot-down in my right front trouser pocket, completely concealed. If more of us would do the same, these LEO-hassle threads in this forum would almost completely disappear. The less that LEOs and easily-frightened sheeple see, the better.
