Today, my son and I visited the Canal Street Cutlery factory in Ellenville NY.
Jean took time out of her day, walked us through the factory and showed us all the steps it takes to make a knife.
Needless to say it was facinating to see how it's done.

Thank you Jean.

I also met Eric (ea42 blade forum member) and Dave Swinden. Mr. Swinden started with Schrade in 1948.

Thank you Eric for inviting us to the factory.

I see a CSC Barlow in my future. ;)

Canal Street doesn't get a LOT of play around here. I really like their knives. The barlow is really nice! :)

That's great you got to visit. I'm quite interested in one of their models right now. Like Derrick said above - you don't hear much about them here on the forum. I know myself well enough that I will probably jump on the knife I am looking at soon.

I agree, I've been really pleased with what I've gotten from them.

I do wish they would consider changing their shield, it looks like a cheap coin.

Ain't it something, how Case, Queen, Canal Street, all try to make a knife feel and look traditional... some even touting the use of traditional hand craftsmanship in the making their knives...Then... they go on and use GLUE to install a shield into a handle, UGH! Well, I have one of the more recent Queen knives, and the shield is pinned... and I am hoping this will be their trend now as new knives are assembled. Maybe it will inspire Canal Street... but I highly doubt Case, to start pinning their shields :-)

Unless its a pattern that I just HAVE to have, I wont buy a knife with a glued in shield. Its a shortcut I wont pay less for and endure

Agreed! I was fairly indifferent to the pinned-vs-glued shield issue... until I had a glued shield fall off! But I do like how CSC opted for a bolster stamp instead on that Barlow. I think if a company doesn't want to pin their shields, they ought to go without!

Big fan of CSC...glued shields and all. I want to see some more barlows from them and a serpentine jack.

I really like the look of many CSC knives, but I have yet to see one with that Gold/Copper/Brass colored coin-like "shield" that I didn't think to myself:
"Golly gee*, way to mess up an otherwise beautiful knife".

*family friendly edit.

I have one of their 4" stockmen in caramel aberdeen bone and 440C steel. I especially like the long bolsters on this model.
The steel holds a very nice edge, and personally, I like the CS shield.
